Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrates average hour per week women spent in selected primary activities, by age and educational attainment in 2009.
Overall, a large number of women of different ages spent more time in leisure and sports. Leisure and sports were famous in educational women as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the chart’s subject and include some relevant figures, such as work rising from 6.9 hours among 15–19-year-olds to 27 hours for ages 25–34, and leisure reaching 51.7 hours among women aged 75 and over. However, the overview is vague and partly inaccurate: leisure is not the leading activity for every age group, since work is slightly higher for ages 25–34 and 35–44. The education section gives only ranges and omits the clear pattern that work rises with educational attainment while leisure and household time generally fall. The household range is also not fully accurate. The response is 138 words, below the 150-word minimum, and this limits the coverage of the chart. Develop a more precise overview and compare both groups more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, an age-group paragraph and a final paragraph on education. This helps the reader distinguish the two sets of data. However, progression is limited because the education paragraph is very brief and ends without a developed comparison. Linking is also repetitive, particularly through repeated uses of “and” and “in terms of,” while “However” does not clearly signal a contrast between the two figures that follow. Some references are unclear, as in “participation in hours fluctuated,” where it is not immediately clear which activity or group is being described. Use clearer topic sentences and connect comparisons explicitly, for example by contrasting work with leisure across education levels.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “average,” “activities,” “educational attainment,” “increased,” and “decreasing,” so the topic is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural. “Leisure and sports were famous in educational women” does not express the intended comparison, and “popular activity” suggests preference rather than time spent. “Hours fluctuating” is also an awkward phrase, and “houshould” is misspelled. Repetition of “hours per week” and “activities” further restricts the range. Aim for precise reporting language such as “accounted for,” “spent,” “rose,” and “declined,” and use terms like “women with higher educational qualifications” when describing the education categories.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of sentence forms, including a complex comparison with “before decreasing again,” and most of the main relationships remain understandable. However, grammatical control is uneven. The opening says “average hour” rather than using the plural, and “aged 15 to 19 spent” lacks a clear subject. In “which gradually increased,” the relative clause appears to refer to the activities rather than the number of hours. The sentence “However, 10.7 and maximum 27.4 hours per week recorded” is missing a finite verb and has an incomplete construction. There are also inconsistent sentence patterns in the education paragraph. Build complete clauses with explicit subjects and verbs, and check articles, plurals and agreement when revising.
