Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the chart’s main contrasts: work is highest among many middle-aged women and falls among older groups, while leisure rises in later life; you also note that degree holders spend more time working and less on household activities. These are relevant overview points. However, some descriptions are unclear or too broad. For example, “working … shows an uptrend over the growing age groups” does not specify that work peaks around ages 25–54 before dropping, and “household activities showed a steady increased curve” overlooks the slight fall from 21.1 hours at ages 65–74 to 19.6 among those 75 and over. The education comparisons are also only partly developed. Select key figures and state the age and education patterns more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has an identifiable overall structure: an opening, a broad overview, and a paragraph of further comparisons. This helps the reader recognise the main topic and some key contrasts. However, progression within the paragraphs is not always clear. The overview moves from age patterns to education patterns in one long sequence, while the final paragraph shifts between age groups and qualifications without a consistent comparison order. Linking expressions such as “However,” “unlike the rest,” and “on contrast” are sometimes awkward or do not clearly show the relationship between ideas. Organise the report into a concise overview followed by separate, logically ordered comparisons of age and educational attainment, and use references that make each comparison explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “average hours,” “declining curve,” “middle age group,” and “degree holders,” so the topic is generally understandable. There is also some attempt to describe trends rather than simply list categories. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “observed its peak,” “gained momentum,” and “left with plenty time” do not describe the data naturally, and “spend most of their time” is repeated without specifying the activity or amount. Spelling errors such as “ativities,” “houshold,” and “leisur” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise reporting language such as “rose,” “peaked,” “declined,” and “accounted for,” and check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including contrasts introduced by “However” and “while,” and the main message can usually be followed. However, errors in sentence structure and grammatical control are noticeable. The opening has a faulty construction: “hours spend by women … spend” repeats the verb and lacks a correct relative structure. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “activities shows” and “group tends,” and articles and plurals are often missing or misplaced, as in “the middle age group” and “the womens.” Some sentences run together or use punctuation inconsistently, particularly in the overview. Practise building accurate sentences around one clear comparison at a time, checking subject–verb agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries.
