Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies some relevant features, including that household activity is highest among women aged 65–74 and lowest among those aged 15–19, and that leisure time peaks in the 75-and-over group. However, it stops before completing the leisure comparison (“and least are”) and gives no account of working hours or the education categories, so the chart is only minimally covered and there is no clear overall summary. The household claim is also slightly inaccurate: the highest figure is 21.1 hours for ages 65–74, while the lowest is 6.0 hours for ages 15–19, rather than simply naming the groups without figures. The response is 94 words, below the required 150. To improve, provide a concise overview and compare the main patterns across both age and education groups.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening sentence introduces the chart, followed by a paragraph about age groups. The phrase “To start with” signals a move into the details, and the activities are named before the comparisons begin. However, the response ends abruptly, the second comparison is unfinished, and there is no clear progression through the chart’s two sections. The long second sentence also combines several ideas without clear separation, while the repeated “and” does little to show how the points relate. Use separate paragraphs for an overview, age comparisons and education comparisons, and complete each comparison before moving on. Clear linking phrases such as “By contrast” or “Regarding educational attainment” would help guide the reader.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses relevant chart vocabulary, including “average number of hours,” “household activities,” and “leisure & sports,” so the reader can identify the subject and categories. However, the range is limited and some phrasing is awkward or repetitive, such as “women in various age group s” and “the number of hours that women in various age group spends.” The phrase “three working areas” is not an accurate label for the three activity categories, since leisure and household activities are not working areas. Aim for precise, natural descriptions of data and avoid repeating “women” and “activities” where a clearer reference is possible. For example, use “time spent on” and “the three activity categories” to describe the chart more accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both a simple introductory sentence and a longer sentence with a subordinate opening, but grammatical control is inconsistent. In “women in various age group spends,” the plural subject requires “groups spend”; similarly, “the age group of women who spends” has faulty agreement and an awkward relative clause. The sentence beginning “To start with the number of hours…” is not a complete, well-controlled construction, and the final phrase “and least are” is unfinished. Spacing before punctuation is also inconsistent. Use shorter, complete sentences and check subject–verb agreement, for example: “Women aged 65–74 spend the most time on household activities, while those aged 15–19 spend the least.”
