Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average hours per week women spent in selected primary activities, by age and educational attainment, 2009
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The bar chart beneath demonstrates the time spent by women on different activities weekly. Women in the chart belong to different age groups and have pursued different levels of education.
Overall, the women who have acquired relatively less education and older women have spent relatively higher time on leisure and sports. Middle-aged females and females having better educational qualifications are actively participating in work related activities.
It can be clearly seen that women belonging to mature age groups like 55-64, 65-74 and 75 & over are more actively involved in sports & leisure activities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the chart’s broad subject and offer a relevant overview: leisure is prominent among older women, while work is more associated with middle-aged women and those with higher qualifications. However, the response reports very little of the data and does not make the comparisons needed to summarise both the age and education groups. For example, it does not mention that leisure peaks at 51.7 hours for women aged 75 and over, or that work is highest among degree holders at 27.4 hours. The claim about older women is supported, but the overview omits key patterns such as household activity generally rising with age. The response is also 94 words, below the required 150, leaving the task only minimally addressed. Add specific figures and comparisons across both chart sections.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic, understandable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a further observation about older age groups. The ideas are generally relevant and the paragraph breaks help distinguish the opening from the main points. However, the final paragraph largely repeats the overview’s point about older women and leisure, so the response does not progress into a fuller account of the chart. There is also no organised comparison of the education categories, and the short length makes the development feel incomplete. To improve, use separate body paragraphs for age and educational attainment, grouping related trends and linking comparisons with phrases such as “by contrast” or “whereas.” This would create clearer progression rather than repeating one feature.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “age groups,” “levels of education,” “leisure and sports,” and “work related activities,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “acquired relatively less education.” However, some expressions are awkward or imprecise: “spent relatively higher time” is not a natural collocation, and “mature age groups” is an unclear label for the older categories. “Actively participating” also suggests participation rather than the number of hours recorded. Aim for concise, accurate chart language such as “spent more time on,” “older age groups,” and “worked longer hours.” More precise vocabulary would help you describe the data without relying on broad or repetitive wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
Your sentences are mostly clear, and you show some ability to use complex structures, for example, “women who have acquired relatively less education and older women have spent…” The opening also uses a clear relative clause: “women in the chart belong to different age groups.” Some grammatical choices are less appropriate for describing a chart from 2009: the present perfect in “have spent” and “have acquired” would be better replaced by past simple forms such as “spent” and “had.” The phrase “females having better educational qualifications are actively participating” is grammatically understandable, but its structure is cumbersome; “women with higher qualifications spent more time working” is more direct. Overall, sentence meaning remains accessible, but more consistent tense use and simpler control of complex phrasing would strengthen accuracy.
