Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart demonstrates the average hours per week women spent in activities such as Working % work related activites, Leisure & sports activities

and Household activities by different age group and educational attainment in 2009.

Overall the trend of leisure and sports are higher in the teenage girls. With increase in the age the actvities of work related activities has also been increases as well. While the amount of hours on household activites are not as much as other two activities has. Whereas Educational attainment also illustrates that number of hours are more spent on work related activities by every education attainment. However the womens having less than a high school diploma are spent more time on house hold activities as compared to highly qualified womens.

The number of hours spent by age group in the bar chart is demonstrates like that the women in the age group of 15 to 19 focuses more on sports activites as compared to other two. Womens with age bracket of 20 to 24 somehow manage both sports and work related activities simulteneously as the number of hours spent on sports activities are 32.7 and 22.1 hours are spent on working related activities. Womens with the age group of 55 plus primarily focuses on work related activites and rarely involves in the other two activities. Womens with the age bracket of 25 to 55 are almost spending number of hours equally on all three activites as there is only very less amount of difference in the rates.

However Womens with different educational attainments have one thing common that they are more spending time on work related activities however the womens with bachelors degree also spends time on the sports activities as well and focus on all three activities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the chart’s three activity categories and make some relevant comparisons, including the figures for women aged 20–24 and the greater household time among women with less education. However, the overview contains important inaccuracies: leisure is highest among the oldest age group, not teenage girls, and work does not keep increasing with age; it peaks around ages 25–54 before falling. The claim that women aged 55 and over mainly focus on work is also contradicted by the chart, where leisure is much higher. The education overview is unclear and incorrectly says work is the activity with the most hours at every attainment level. Select the main patterns accurately and support them with a few key figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, an age-group paragraph and a paragraph on education. This gives the reader some organisation, and comparisons such as the 20–24 figures are placed together. However, progression is weakened by repeated and sometimes unclear statements, particularly the claims that women aged 55-plus focus on work and that women aged 25–55 spend nearly equal time on all activities. Linking words such as “However” and “Whereas” are used frequently without always showing a clear contrast, and the final paragraph does not develop the education comparison systematically. Organise the body by chart category, compare the highest and lowest values, and use linking phrases only where the relationship between ideas is clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “educational attainment,” “age group,” “household activities” and “leisure and sports,” so the subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited by repeated wording such as “activities,” “number of hours” and “spent time,” while several phrases are inaccurate or unnatural: “focuses more on sports activities,” “manage both … simultaneously,” and “rarely involves in” do not describe the chart precisely. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “activites,” “simulteneously” and “womens,” which reduce clarity and control. Use concise chart language such as “recorded,” “accounted for” and “rose/fell,” and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt longer sentences and use some subordinate clauses, for example, “Womens with age bracket of 20 to 24 … as the number of hours spent…” and “However the womens with bachelors degree…”. However, these complex attempts are often faulty, and sentence control is inconsistent. Examples include “the trend … are higher,” “the activities … has also been increases,” and “the number of hours … is demonstrates,” which show problems with agreement and verb forms. Articles and plural forms are also frequently missing or incorrect, as in “by different age group” and “the womens.” Some sentences are difficult to follow because several ideas are joined without clear grammatical structure. Practise accurate simple comparisons first, then add subordinate clauses while checking agreement and tense.
