Student answer (Band 5.5)
The bar diagram illustrates the average time spent on three different activities by women of various age groups and having varying level of degrees per week in 2009.
Women of age group 45-54 usually spend highest proportion of time of 27.3% in working and work related activities. Whereas, people of age 75 and above spent the lowest proportion of time (1.3%) in the same category. Female of age group 25 to 34, followed by 35 to 44 were also found to spend 27 and 26.3% ot time respectively, which are the second and third highest in the category. On the contrast, women of older and younger age groups were spending more time in leisure and sports compared to the middle aged group. The highest proportion was 51.7% in 75 and over aged women, whereas the lowest was 27.4 in the group 35 to 44. In terms of household activities, two age groups of 65 to 74 (21.1%) and 75 and above (19.5%) spent highest proportion of time compared with other age gruops.
For the age group 25 and above, women having bachelor degrees and above were much involved in working and work related activities and the percentage was lowest among the ones who doesn't have a high school diploma. In contrast, the same group could spent highest amount of time in leisure and sports. However, the percentage of time did not vary significantly with educational background.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify several important patterns, including the peak in leisure among women aged 75 and over and the greater work-related time reported by women with higher education. However, the response only partly covers the chart: it gives little meaningful comparison of the education groups’ household activity figures, and the final claim that leisure time “did not vary significantly” by education is misleading, since the figures range from 28.6 to 43.1 hours. Some data are also inaccurate: 45–54-year-olds worked 27.0 hours, not 27.3, and the 35–44 leisure low is 27.4 hours, not a percentage. The overview is not clearly separated from details, and the response lacks a concise summary of the chart’s main overall contrasts. Select and accurately compare the strongest trends across both categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a generally understandable sequence: it first discusses age groups and then turns to educational attainment, with linking expressions such as “Whereas,” “On the contrast,” and “In contrast.” This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, the first paragraph moves directly into individual figures without a clear overview, and some transitions are awkward or do not show the relationship between ideas precisely. For example, “Whereas” begins a fragment, while “On the contrast” is an unnatural connector. The education paragraph also combines work and leisure claims before ending with a broad statement that is not well connected to the figures. Use a distinct overview, group related comparisons together, and choose linking phrases that accurately express contrast.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “average time,” “working and work related activities,” “leisure and sports,” and “educational background.” These terms make the topic clear, and attempts such as “middle aged group” help distinguish age categories. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “highest proportion of time” when the chart reports hours, “much involved in working,” and “could spent highest amount of time.” There are also spelling errors such as “gruops” and “ot,” and repeated use of “proportion” and “percentage” obscures the unit. Prefer precise language such as “hours per week,” “spent the most time,” and “worked the longest hours,” and check spelling and natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including comparisons and subordinate clauses, as in “whereas the lowest was…” and “women having bachelor degrees and above…”. The main meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. “Whereas” is used as a sentence fragment, “women of age group” lacks a necessary article, and “the ones who doesn’t have” has a subject–verb agreement error. The phrase “the same group could spent” also uses an incorrect verb form, and the sentence beginning “For the age group 25 and above” has an unclear grammatical relationship to the education categories. Build complete sentences around contrast clauses, check agreement and verb forms, and revise long sentences so each comparison has a clear subject.
