Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given bar chart illustrates the average number of hours women of various age groups and different educational attainment spend on primary activities (working and work related activities, leisure and sports, and household activities) every week.

Overall, leisure and sports were more common, whereas work related activities were least attractive among older people.

In terms of working, nearly 50% women aged 75 and over worked about 51 hours per week

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The opening identifies the chart’s subject and names all three activity categories, and the overview correctly notes that leisure takes a prominent place. However, the response is far too incomplete to summarise the chart: it gives no meaningful comparisons across the age and education groups and reports only one figure. That figure is seriously misread: women aged 75 and over spent about 1.3 hours working per week, not 51 hours, and the chart reports hours rather than percentages. The claim that work was least attractive among older people is also too broad, since working hours peak around ages 25–54 before falling. The response contains 70 words, below the required 150. To improve, select the main trends and support them with accurate figures from both sections of the chart.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic structure: an introductory sentence, an overview beginning with “Overall,” and a final sentence that attempts to discuss working. This gives the reader some indication of the intended organisation. However, the response stops before developing that structure, so there is no clear progression through the age data and educational-attainment data, and the final point is not connected to the overview. The contrast signalled by “whereas” is useful, but the overview itself is too general to guide the reader through the chart. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and the main comparisons, and organise details by age and education, using clear links such as “By contrast” or “Among women with higher education.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses relevant chart vocabulary, including “average number of hours,” “age groups,” “educational attainment,” and the names of the three activities. This shows a basic ability to describe the subject, but the range is narrow because the response is very short, and some choices are imprecise or unnatural. “More common” does not clearly describe time spent on activities, while “least attractive” suggests preference rather than the number of hours recorded. The phrase “nearly 50% women” also confuses a proportion with a time measure. Prefer precise reporting language such as “accounted for the most time” and “spent approximately 1.3 hours per week working.” Accurate terms for hours and trends would make the summary clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The first sentence is a complete, reasonably controlled complex sentence, and the overview uses a clear contrast structure with “whereas.” These show some ability to form more than simple statements. However, the range is limited, and the final sentence is grammatically incomplete in meaning because its figures and comparison do not form a coherent report of the chart. In the opening, “women of various age groups and different educational attainment spend” has an awkward agreement and parallel structure; “women in various age groups and with different levels of educational attainment spend” would be clearer. The phrase “nearly 50% women” also lacks the article or quantifier structure needed for a grammatical percentage expression. Practise varied, accurate comparison sentences and check agreement and sentence completeness.
