Student answer (Band 5.0)

The graph illustrates the average hours per week spent by different categories of women according to the data published in 2009. According to this data, women spent their time in different activities such as working, playing sports or doing nothing and also in household activities.

First of all, let’s discuss the time spent by women while working. The graph showed that the women of all ages spent most of their time in sports or spent it freely while doing nothing. It was followed by the second activity which was working or doing work related activities. Women of age 45 to 54 showed the most interest in this activity while the women of age 75 and over it showed the most interest in leisure activities or sports.

Subsequently, the third activity which was household activities was mostly performed by the women of age between 65 to 74.

Finally, the graph illustrated on the preferences of women and how they can change with the passage of time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies the chart’s broad subject and notes that leisure is prominent, but it does not adequately summarise the data or select and report the main features. The claim that women of all ages spent most time on leisure is inaccurate: for ages 25–34 and 35–44, working hours are slightly higher than leisure hours. The statement that women aged 45–54 showed the greatest interest in work is also incorrect; the highest figure is for women with a bachelor’s degree or higher, while several age groups record 27 hours. You correctly identify the 75-and-over group as having the most leisure and the 65–74 group as having the most household activity among age groups. Build a clear overview and support it with accurate comparisons across both age and education categories.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic sequence, signalled by “First of all,” “Subsequently,” and “Finally,” and the response moves from work to household activities. However, the organisation does not create a clear progression through the chart: the education data are not discussed, and the final sentence gives a general comment rather than a concluding comparison. The opening also lists activities without establishing the main patterns. Some linking phrases feel mechanical, and “Finally” introduces no meaningful summary. Group related information into paragraphs—for example, age patterns and educational-attainment patterns—and use comparisons to connect the figures. This would make the report easier to follow and give it a more purposeful structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary is sufficient to identify the chart’s topic, with phrases such as “working or doing work related activities,” “leisure activities or sports,” and “household activities.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are imprecise or repetitive. “Doing nothing” misrepresents leisure and sports, while “showed the most interest” describes preference rather than the number of hours recorded. “Spent their time in different activities” and repeated uses of “activity” could be replaced with more precise reporting language. Aim for neutral, data-focused terms such as “recorded,” “accounted for,” “spent,” and “the highest figure.” More accurate vocabulary would help distinguish the chart’s categories and avoid suggesting motives that the data do not show.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and more extended sentence forms, and most of its meaning remains understandable. There are some errors in sentence construction and tense control, including “the women of age 75 and over it showed,” where the subject is repeated and the clause is not formed correctly. “The graph illustrated on the preferences” uses an unnecessary preposition, and “women of age between 65 to 74” has an awkward age-range construction. The opening sentence is also long and loosely joined. Use consistent past-tense reporting and check that each clause has a clear subject and verb. For example, write “Women aged 75 and over spent the most time on leisure” and “women aged 65 to 74 recorded the highest household figure.”
