Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given chart depicts the mean number of hours that women of diverse age groups and differing amounts of education spend on primary activities weekly.

In the given bar graph it is noticable that women from the ages of fifteen to twenty four spend most of their time on leisure and sports, similar to those of ages fourty five and above; However, this is not as dramatically seen with females of ages between twenty five and fourty four. It is shown that most of the women between these ages have given a good portion of their time to work related activities.

As for the case of Educational attainment for the ages of twenty five and above, Most women spend their time on leisure based activities. Women with a bachelors degree or higher spend their time divided between work related activites and leisure based activities, and the ratio for leisure time activity compared to any other activity rises as the educational degree gets lower and lower for each educational attainment.

This graph shows how based on educational attainment and age how time gets divided between work and leisure time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify relevant broad patterns, including that leisure is prominent among the youngest and oldest age groups and that women aged 25–44 devote substantial time to work. However, the response only partially reports the chart: it gives no figures and largely omits household activities, despite their steady rise with age before a slight fall in the oldest group. The education comparison is also imprecise. Leisure does not simply rise as education falls in comparison with every other activity; for example, household time is higher than leisure time only in no group, while work and leisure change in opposite directions across education levels. The final sentence repeats the topic rather than providing a clear, data-based overview. Select the main trends across all three activities and support them with accurate comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure: it introduces the chart, discusses age groups, then education, and ends with a summary. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “As for the case of Educational attainment” signal a shift. However, progression is limited because the final paragraph mostly repeats the introduction, and the age discussion moves between groups without a clear comparison of the three activities. Some linking is awkward or overused, particularly “It is shown that” and the repeated “based on.” The long second sentence in the first body paragraph also joins several ideas with a semicolon and “However,” making the relationship between them less clear. Grouping the key trends into a concise overview and logically ordered comparisons would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “mean number,” “age groups,” “educational attainment,” and “work related activities.” These choices make the topic clear, but several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, such as “spend their time,” “leisure based activities,” and “time gets divided.” There are also noticeable spelling errors in “noticable,” “fourty,” and “activites,” which reduce accuracy. Some phrasing is unnecessarily elaborate, for example “differing amounts of education,” where a more direct chart description would be clearer. Aim for precise terms such as “hours devoted to” and “the proportion of time,” and check spelling carefully. This would make the vocabulary more controlled and suitable for a data summary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including a comparison introduced by “similar to” and a longer sentence using “However.” Meaning is generally understandable, but control is uneven. The opening of the second paragraph, “As for the case of Educational attainment for the ages of twenty five and above,” is an incomplete or awkwardly constructed introductory phrase, and “Most” is incorrectly capitalised mid-sentence. The final sentence repeats “how” and has an unclear structure: “This graph shows how based on educational attainment and age how time gets divided.” Punctuation around the semicolon and “However” also needs attention. Use shorter, complete comparison sentences and check clause structure and capitalisation to make the message consistently clear.
