Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The opening identifies the chart’s subject, and the overview attempts to highlight broad patterns: leisure is prominent, household activity rises with age, and work is more common among younger and middle-aged women. However, the response stops just as the detailed account begins (“In detail, women with the age group”), so it does not report the chart’s key figures or make meaningful comparisons across the age and education categories. The overview is also too broad: leisure is not highest for every group, since working hours exceed leisure for women aged 25–54, and the education groups show a clear relationship between attainment and work/leisure that is not described. The response is 74 words below the required minimum. Develop the overview accurately and support it with selected figures from both sets of categories.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an introduction is followed by an overview and then a paragraph intended for details. This gives the reader a recognisable starting structure, and “Overall” signals the summary clearly. However, the final paragraph is left unfinished, so there is no progression into evidence or comparisons. The overview also combines several ideas in one long sentence, making the relationships between them less clear. To improve, complete the body with separate, logically grouped comparisons—for example, age patterns first and educational attainment second—and use linking phrases to show contrasts and trends. Ensure each paragraph is complete and contributes to the summary.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses some relevant vocabulary, including “age brackets,” “educational qualifications,” “leisure and sports,” and “household activities,” so the topic is generally identifiable. There is also an attempt to vary wording with “typical numbers” and “major activities.” However, several choices are imprecise or informal for an academic chart summary: “stuff” is unsuitable, and “doing major activities” is vague. “Numbers of hours” is less natural than “hours spent.” The misspelling “activites” is noticeable, while “elderly females” is an awkward way to refer to the older age groups. Use the chart’s category labels accurately and choose concise, formal collocations such as “time spent on” and “women aged 65 and over.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response includes a clear introductory sentence and attempts a more complex overview using a contrast between household and work-related activities. However, grammatical control is uneven. In “all age groups and educational level women spend,” the subject is awkwardly formed and the verb does not fit the past-time chart description; “spent” would be appropriate. The phrase “the weekly number of household activities were higher” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “women with the age group” is an incomplete construction. The response also shows little variety beyond basic sentence patterns. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build complete comparison sentences, checking that each subject agrees with its verb and that clauses are finished.
