Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the chart’s subject and give a broad overview, noting that women aged 75 and over spend the most time on leisure and the least on work. The figures of 51.7 and 1.3 are accurate. However, the response reports only a small part of the chart: it omits the educational-attainment data and gives almost no comparisons across the age groups. The claim that the 54–74 group recorded 44% leisure and 6.9% work is also imprecise: those figures belong specifically to ages 65–74, not the whole 54–74 range. The overview’s reference to “percentages” is inaccurate because the chart measures hours per week. The response is 32 words below the required minimum. Cover both chart sections and select several accurate comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is a basic structure: an opening sentence, an overview beginning “Overall,” and a detail paragraph introduced by “To begin with.” This gives the reader some sense of how the response is organised. However, the progression stops after one comparison, so the information is not developed into a complete summary of the chart. The overview also mentions changes and stability without explaining which categories show these patterns, leaving the connection to the detail paragraph unclear. Linking phrases such as “In addition” do not lead to a specific supporting point. Organise the body into clear comparisons—for example, age patterns followed by education patterns—and use transitions to show how each comparison relates to the overview.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some relevant chart vocabulary, including “age groups,” “educational attainment,” “leisure and sports,” and “work related activities,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors make the writing difficult to read, such as “bar cart,” “wmone,” “thier,” “utlizing,” and “represnting.” Some expressions are also unsuitable for describing the data: “accounted for utilizing highest time” is awkward, and “percentage” does not match a chart measured in hours. Aim for precise, natural reporting language such as “spent the most time on” and “hours per week.” Proofreading spelling and choosing accurate collocations would make the summary clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast introduced by “whereas” and a clause beginning “while.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence construction and punctuation frequently interrupt the reading. For example, “Overall, the age groups showe different trends over the period while…” lacks clear grammatical structure, and “In addition with some categories experienced…” is not a complete, correctly formed clause. The detail sentence beginning “To begin with womens…” also needs an article or possessive form and clearer sentence boundaries; several sentences run directly into the next after a full stop. Practise forming complete clauses, using consistent past-tense verbs for the 2009 data, and checking punctuation and sentence boundaries.
