Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the chart’s three activities and make a few relevant comparisons, including that women aged 75 and over spend the least time working and that teenagers spend little time on household activities. However, the overview is incomplete and some key patterns are missing: leisure rises to its highest level among the oldest women, while work peaks among women aged 25–54 and then falls. Several figures or comparisons are inaccurate. For example, women aged 25–34 spend 27 hours working and 28.6 hours on leisure, not “about 35 hours” on leisure; the chart gives hours, not percentages. The final comparison about college students’ household work is also unclear and misrepresents the figures. Select the main trends and report them precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph of examples. Linking expressions such as “To be specific,” “Furthermore,” and “however” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, progression is not consistently clear because the examples move between age groups and educational categories without a clear organising principle. Some links also create confusing relationships, as in “in addition for about 40 hours,” and the final sentence does not clearly explain which education group is being compared. Group the age data together and the education data together, and use transitions that accurately signal contrast or addition. Clearer referencing would also help readers follow what “them” and “some college students” refer to.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “age group,” “educational attainment,” “leisure and sports,” and “work related activities.” These terms make the subject generally clear, and you attempt some variation with phrases such as “spent the least amount of time.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural: “primary activities in which women … took part” is wordy, “household work” is less accurate than the chart’s “household activities,” and “spent almost 27%” confuses a percentage with a number of hours. There are also spelling slips, including “adolscents” and “wetre.” Use the chart’s labels consistently and check spelling and collocations to make comparisons more precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “however” and “which,” and most of the meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical problems nevertheless reduce clarity. In “the age group 25 to 34 spent almost 27% which is around 30 hours,” the clause structure is awkward and the relationship between the figure and its explanation is unclear. “The age group of 25 and above with less than a high school diploma spent…” also has a confusing structure, while “for about 40 hours a week were spent” is an awkward passive construction. Aim for direct, controlled sentences, such as “Women aged 25–34 spent 27 hours working and 28.6 hours on leisure.” Check articles, clause boundaries, and punctuation when joining comparisons.
