Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given bar chart demonstrates the average hours per week in 2009 that women spent in three various activites; working, enjoyment and houshold work, and compares different age groups and individuals with different educational attainments.

Overall, a large portion of time is spent on leisure and sports activities across the chart. Youngsters and elderly people spend most of their time in entertaining activities, however, hours spent on other activites vary. For instance, those with more educational achievments spend more time in doing work related activities than household chores.

The hours spend on work and house chores increase in the upcoming age groups while time spent on leisure activities decrease. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the chart’s main pattern—that leisure is a major activity—and make relevant comparisons across both age and education groups. Several figures are accurate, including teenagers’ 36.8 hours of leisure and the 75-and-over group’s 51.7 hours. You also correctly note that work rises with educational attainment while leisure falls. However, the overview is not fully precise: leisure is not highest for every age group, since work slightly exceeds leisure among women aged 25–34 and 35–44. Some details are also misreported: the 35–44 group spends 26.3 hours working and 27.4 on leisure, while 17.3 hours of household activity belongs to ages 45–54, not 35–44. More careful selection and checking of key comparisons would make the summary more complete and accurate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for age and educational attainment. This makes the two dimensions of the chart easy to follow, and phrases such as “As the education level increases” help signal a trend. The progression is generally logical, but some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “With a slight fluctuation” does not specify which series fluctuates, and the sentence that follows combines several trends without clearly distinguishing them. The overview also moves from leisure to education without a sharply organised comparison. To strengthen cohesion, group related figures consistently and use precise references such as “the working-hours figure” or “household activity” rather than broad terms like “other activities.”

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing the chart, including “average,” “increase,” “decrease,” “slight fluctuation,” and “educational attainment.” These choices communicate the main trends, and some variation in wording avoids excessive repetition. However, several expressions are informal or imprecise for an academic report: “enjoyment,” “entertaining activities,” “fun activities,” and “house chores” are less suitable than the chart’s labels. There are also spelling errors, including “activites,” “achievments,” “lisure,” and “deploma,” alongside awkward phrases such as “spend more time in doing work related activities.” Use the chart’s terminology consistently and check spelling and collocations to improve precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “while” and a conditional-style comparison beginning “As the education level increases.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and inconsistencies reduce accuracy. For example, “The hours spend on work” should use the past participle “spent,” and “those having a bachelor's degree spend” shifts into the present tense while the report otherwise describes 2009 data in the past. In “while 6.9 on work,” the clause is incomplete and needs a verb, such as “while they spent 6.9 hours working.” Review tense consistency, complete clause structure, and agreement, while retaining the range of sentence patterns you already attempt.
