Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar charts below depicts the time spend by different age group of women on various activities and time spend to attain various education levels by women.

Overall, women spent most of their time by leisure and in sports. Also, as the level of education is increased, women are less associated to work related activities.

Women of age in between 15 to 54 as the age increases their working time also increased. However working time decreased after they reached the age of 55. Those of age 15-19 spent around 37 hours a day in sports, leisure and significantly decresed to 26 hours a week when their age is in between 35 and 44. Finally, they can get much free time as their increment of age. On the othe side, women moastly engaged their time in the household activities. Before they reach 20, they spend only 6.9 hours to do household activities later, it was substantially raised to 44 hours a week.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify two broad patterns: leisure is prominent, and work-related time generally rises with educational attainment. However, the report only partially selects and accurately describes the chart’s main features, and several figures or categories are confused. For example, women aged 15–19 spend about 37 hours per week on leisure, not “37 hours a day”; household time for this group is 6 hours, not 6.9, and it rises to about 21 hours among women aged 65–74, rather than 44. The 44-hour figure is leisure for that age group. The education comparison also gives 28 hours for bachelor’s-level work, whereas the chart shows 27.4. Include a clearer overview and compare the age and education groups accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for age and education. This helps the reader recognise the two chart groupings. Some progression is also signalled by phrases such as “However” and “Similarly.” Nevertheless, the organisation within the age paragraph is difficult to follow because leisure and household figures are mixed up, and “On the other side” does not clearly introduce the intended contrast. References such as “they” and “their” are sometimes unclear. Group each activity or trend consistently, use linking expressions only where the relationship is clear, and ensure each paragraph moves from a main comparison to supporting figures.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “increased,” “decreased,” “substantially,” and “household activities,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range and control are limited, with repeated or imprecise phrases that sometimes make the meaning difficult to interpret. For instance, “time spend to attain various education levels” suggests that time is spent achieving education, rather than comparing women by educational attainment. “Get much free time” is also vague for describing leisure hours, while “less associated to work related activities” is an awkward way to describe a decline. Choose precise terms such as “time spent,” “leisure,” and “worked,” and check spelling, including “decreased,” “hours,” and “mostly.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “However” and a time clause beginning “Before they reach 20.” However, errors are frequent, and some sentence structures make comparisons hard to understand. The opening sentence has subject–verb disagreement (“The bar charts … depicts”), and “Women of age in between 15 to 54 as the age increases their working time also increased” is an incomplete, poorly controlled construction. Tense and agreement also shift, as in “they spend” followed by “it was substantially raised.” Use complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, maintain past tense for the 2009 data, and practise accurate comparative clauses, for example, “As women aged, their working hours increased until the 45–54 group.”
