Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the chart’s subject and gives a relevant overall observation that leisure and sports take the most time, which is supported by the figures. It also accurately reports 36.8 hours for women aged 15–19. However, the task is addressed only minimally: there is no meaningful comparison across the age groups or educational levels, and almost all of the chart’s main patterns are omitted. For example, work hours rise to around 27 among women aged 25–54 before falling, while leisure increases among older women; neither trend is described. The response is also 85 words below the required minimum. To develop the report, include a fuller overview and select several key comparisons from both chart sections.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic sequence: it introduces the chart, gives an overall statement, and then begins a detail paragraph with “To begin.” This makes the limited information reasonably easy to follow. However, there is no clear progression beyond one data point, and the paragraphing does not develop a complete report. The linking phrase “To begin” promises further details that never follow, while the relationship between the overview and the example remains undeveloped. Build a clearer structure with an introduction, an overview, and separate detail paragraphs comparing age groups and educational attainment. Use linking expressions to show contrasts and trends, rather than relying on a single transition.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses some relevant chart vocabulary, including “average number of hours,” “primary activities,” “leisure and sports,” and “educational attainments.” These choices communicate the topic, but the range is limited and there is little precise language for describing comparisons or trends. There are also noticeable spelling errors in “lersure” and “attaiments,” and “maximum amounts of time” is an awkward way to express the chart’s highest category. Use accurate terms such as “spent the most time,” “rose,” “declined,” and “compared with” to report the data more naturally. Proofreading spelling and choosing more precise collocations would make the short report clearer and more appropriate for an academic summary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response includes a simple introductory sentence and an attempted complex overview beginning “Overall, it can be seen that…”. However, the range is narrow, and errors in basic sentence construction and agreement are noticeable. In “The bar chart compare,” the singular subject requires “compares”; “between the women of different age groups and the women with various educational attainments” is an awkward comparison structure. The phrase “according to the both age groups” also has an incorrect article and does not form a clear grammatical relationship. The final sentence, “age 15-19 spent,” needs a clearer subject such as “women aged 15–19 spent.” Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and article use, then vary sentence patterns to compare figures and trends.
