Student answer (Band 7.5)

Some societies regard obesity as an area of major concern. Many believe that advertisements pertaining to junk food are largely responsible for this and should be banned while others are of the view that junk food ads do not contribute significantly to the rising problem of obesity and must not be banned.

Persuasive advertising does contribute to the ongoing problem of obesity. However, banning is not the solution.

Societies across the world are faced by the pressing concern of rising obesity levels especially amongst the teenagers. Ads glorifying the consumption of junk food amplify the situation to an extent. Lucrative ads containing inviting images of the junk food drive individuals to the fast food outlets. Moreover, tempting deals like buy one get one are offered to people which drives them to consume more. Discounts are specially offered to school-goers at popular fast food establishments whereas they should be rather incentivised to eat healthy. Influencers with huge base of followers promote brands that serve junk food and this makes the situation even worse.

Having said that, while advertising does amplify the problem, it can't be blamed squarely for the prevailing situation. Peer pressure too plays a significant role, especially in pushing the youth to indulge in junk food eating. Moreover, busy lifestyles of parents in todays day and age also contribute to unhealthy eating habits. Home cooked food has become a rarity and the busy schedules are driving parents and their children towards increased fast food intake. More weightage should be given on finding a right balance. One or two outings in the weekend to fast food chains is acceptable but daily reliance on junk creates a problem as children miss out on the essential nutrients they require.

To conclude, while fast food advertising doesn't deserve a blanket ban, health warnings must be made mandatory in all advertisements that promote junk food. More awareness campaigns should be undertaken especially at school level to inform kids about various health cocerns associated with the junk food.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly discuss both sides of the argument—the role of advertising in obesity and the counter-argument regarding other factors like lifestyle and peer pressure—and provide a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the mention of influencers and parental schedules. To reach a higher band, ensure that your personal opinion is more explicitly stated in the introduction or throughout the body paragraphs, rather than just appearing in the conclusion. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively with a consistent position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central focus, and you use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Having said that', and 'To conclude' to link your points. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by ensuring the introduction and conclusion are distinct from the body paragraphs. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences could be more tightly linked to improve the flow. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'lucrative ads', 'blanket ban', and 'prevailing situation' show an awareness of style and collocation. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'weightage' (which is less common in this context) and 'cocerns' (a spelling error). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items related to health and societal issues to demonstrate greater flexibility and precision in your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. While there are some grammatical errors, such as 'faced by the pressing concern' (should be 'faced with') and 'in todays day and age' (missing apostrophe), these do not impede communication. Your control of punctuation is generally good, though there are occasional slips. To achieve a higher band, aim to increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and ensure consistent use of articles and prepositions throughout the text.
