IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, obesity is regarded as a major problem. Some people believe that junk food advertising is largely to blame for this problem and should be banned. However, others feel that junk food advertising does not contribute to the problem of obesity and should not be banned.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience·and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence. Write at least 250 words.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

These days, an increasing number of people are becoming overweight and therefore coming down with related health issues. While some believe that junk food advertising is not the cause of this phenomenon and it should not be banned, I would argue that it is.

First and foremost, it is worth admitting that commercial is not the only reason for people to consume fast food. There are a variety of other factors, such as limited time people have and the convenience of pre-cooked food. For instance, even though some employees have never watched any junk food advertisements, they still choose to purchase instant noodles for their dinner, which is a common phenomenon in China. Not only can it help workers save more time but it is also a cost-effective option.

On the other hand, the influence of advertising is undeniable, especially when it comes to younger generations who do not have enough knowledge to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy diets. For example, if children come across junk food advertising videos while scrolling on their phones, they will natural want to try them out. At the same time, it has become far more easier for people to purchase junk food because they can simply click severals buttons and submit the order. For these reasons, younger generations are overconsuming ultra-processed food without having any healthy diets to counteract the impact on it.

In conclusion, some people believe that advertising dose not bring a negative impact on people's health because they are focusing on other aspects of people's lifestyle, whereas I strongly believe that we need to be aware of the influence of advertisements because younger generations' purchase decisions are influenced by them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. For instance, the argument regarding the vulnerability of younger generations to advertising is logically extended. However, the development of the opposing view is slightly more limited, relying on a single example of instant noodles. To reach a higher band, ensure that both sides of the argument are explored with equal depth and that the conclusion clearly synthesizes the main points rather than just restating the position. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the two body paragraphs, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Referencing is clear throughout, and the relationship between ideas is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a solid band 7 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey ideas with precision. You use some good collocations like 'ultra-processed food' and 'counteract the impact'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and word-choice issues, such as 'commercial' (used as a noun to mean 'advertisement') and 'natural' (should be 'naturally'). Additionally, 'far more easier' is a grammatical error involving a double comparative. To improve, focus on using less common lexical items more accurately and ensure that word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at using complex sentences, such as 'While some believe that... I would argue that...'. However, there are several grammatical slips, including 'commercial is not the only reason' (should be 'commercials' or 'advertising'), 'far more easier' (a double comparative error), 'severals buttons' (should be 'several'), and 'dose' (spelling error). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help improve this score.
