In some societies, obesity is regarded as a major problem. Some people believe that junk food advertising is largely to blame for this problem and should be banned. However, others feel that junk food advertising does not contribute to the problem of obesity and should not be banned.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience·and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence. Write at least 250 words.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
These days, an increasing number of people are becoming overweight and therefore coming down with related health issues. While some believe that junk food advertising is not the cause of this phenomenon and it should not be banned, I would argue that it is.
First and foremost, it is worth admitting that commercials are not the only reason for people to consume fast food. There are a variety of other factors, such as the limited time people have and the convenience of pre-cooked food. For instance, even though some employees have never watched any junk food advertisements, they still choose to purchase instant noodles for their dinner, which is a common phenomenon in China. Not only can it help workers save more time but it is also a cost-effective option.
On the other hand, the influence of advertising is undeniable, especially when it comes to younger generations who do not have enough knowledge to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy diets. For example, if children come across junk food advertising videos while scrolling on their phones, they will naturally want to try them out. At the same time, it has become far easier for people to purchase junk food because they can simply click several buttons and submit the order. For these reasons, younger generations are overconsuming ultra-processed food without having any healthy diets to counteract the impact of such food.
In conclusion, some people believe that advertising does not bring a negative impact on people's health because they are focusing on other aspects of people's lifestyle, whereas I strongly believe that we need to be aware of the influence of advertisements because younger generations' purchase decisions are influenced by them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant, particularly the distinction between lifestyle factors and the influence of advertising on children. However, the development of your arguments could be more extensive. For instance, while you mention that children are influenced by videos, you could further explore the psychological mechanisms or the role of corporate marketing strategies to reach a higher band. Overall, the response is well-structured and directly answers the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'First and foremost,' 'On the other hand,' and 'For these reasons,' which help guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The progression of ideas is smooth, and each paragraph has a clear central topic. To improve, ensure that the transition between the two body paragraphs is slightly more nuanced to better reflect the contrast between the two opposing views.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'phenomenon,' 'differentiate,' 'ultra-processed food,' and 'counteract the impact' are used accurately. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'junk food' and 'advertising,' which could be varied with synonyms such as 'fast-food industry,' 'promotional campaigns,' or 'nutritionally deficient products.' The word choice is generally natural and appropriate for an academic context, and there are no significant spelling or collocation errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Examples such as 'While some believe that... I would argue that it is' and 'even though some employees have never watched... they still choose to' show good control over complex grammar. There are very few grammatical errors, and your punctuation is generally accurate. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of advanced structures, such as passive voice constructions or conditional sentences (e.g., 'Were governments to implement a ban, the prevalence of obesity might decline'), to demonstrate greater flexibility.
