Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views on junk food advertising and obesity. However, the development of ideas is limited and sometimes contradictory. For instance, the second paragraph attempts to argue against banning advertisements but does so in a confusing way, and the third paragraph repeats the idea of banning without adding depth. The student's own opinion is not clearly stated or integrated into the structure, making the overall position difficult to follow. To improve, ensure each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed argument supported by clear evidence rather than anecdotal or repetitive statements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression between ideas is weak. Transitions are often missing or misused, such as the abrupt shift between the discussion of advertising and the mention of medical research. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, which disrupts the flow of the argument. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the writer's train of thought. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'nevertheless') and ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would significantly improve the coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'big', 'problem', and 'good'. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'band' instead of 'banned', 'holdings' instead of 'billboards', and 'stope' instead of 'stopped'. These errors occasionally impede communication. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on learning topic-specific collocations related to health and advertising, and work on using more precise vocabulary to express complex ideas rather than relying on simple, high-frequency words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are attempts at complex sentences, they are often grammatically incorrect, such as 'Some people are arguing junk food advertisements are the main reason and it must be band.' There are persistent errors in subject-verb agreement ('Every one are giving'), article usage, and verb tense consistency. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of semicolons and full stops. To improve, the student needs to focus on mastering basic sentence construction and reducing the frequency of errors that interfere with the clarity of the message.
