Student answer (Band 7.0)

In many countries, obesity has become a common problem among individuals, leading some people to believe that the major contributor to this health problem is advertisements of junk food, and therefore, should be banned, while others argue that advertising does not contribute to this issue, as other aspects of human lifestyle do, and should not be banned. This essay will discuss both perspectives. In my opinion, while advertising persuade customers about different junk food, individuals own lifestyle and habits contributes more to the problem of obesity.

On the one hand, supporters of the view that advertising of fast food should be banned because it increases the issue of obesity among people believe that it attracts people to try fast food. Advertisements are presented in an attractive way by fast food companies by using effective tactics that helps customers to aware about different available fast food in the market and persuade them to eat it. For instance, many fast-food companies advertise their items by launching famous personalities to promote their products, that attracts that attention of million people. Therefore, many people believe that fast food advertising contributes to accelerate the obesity issue and banning it would be a significant solution.

On the other hand, many people argue that people's own lifestyle and eating habits are more responsible to dealing with the issue of obesity. In today's digitalized world, individuals are increasingly living sedentary lifestyle and overly relying on fast food to avoid making home-made meals. As a result, they are more suffered from this health concern. For instance, some people do not give significance to doing exercise, yoga, which is essential to maintain the health, and therefore, dealing with increasing weight and other health issues. In contrast, advertising only informed customers, however do not compelled them to eat regularly. Therefore, people's own lifestyle and habits play a major role in this growing trend.

In conclusion, while advertisements influenced consumers to try fast food, I believe it is not a major contributor of increasing obesity issue. This is because the people's own sedentary lifestyle and avoid eating home- prepared meals are more significantly contributes to the issue.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. Ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the use of celebrities in advertising and the impact of sedentary lifestyles. However, some arguments could be further extended to reach a higher band; for instance, the discussion on why advertising should be banned could delve deeper into the psychological impact on children or vulnerable groups. Overall, the task is well-addressed with a clear logical flow and a balanced discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used throughout, such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader. Paragraphing is appropriate, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions between sentences within paragraphs feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional minor slips in pronoun usage or linking phrases do not impede the overall readability of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'sedentary lifestyle,' 'digitalized world,' and 'health concern.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'they are more suffered from' (should be 'they suffer more from') and 'advertising only informed customers, however do not compelled them' (should be 'advertising only informs customers, but does not compel them'). To improve, focus on using more precise verbs and ensuring correct word forms in complex sentences.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay shows a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and subject-verb agreement, such as 'individuals own lifestyle and habits contributes' (should be 'contribute') and 'advertising... do not compelled' (should be 'does not compel'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in sentence construction that occasionally distract the reader. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring that your complex structures are error-free and that subject-verb agreement is consistently maintained.
