Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views on junk food advertising and obesity. However, the development of ideas is limited and often unclear. The arguments regarding 'outside food' and 'new cuisine' are repetitive and lack specific evidence or logical depth. The student's own opinion is mentioned in the introduction and conclusion but is not clearly articulated or supported throughout the body paragraphs. The response struggles to maintain a consistent focus on the specific issue of 'advertising' as requested by the prompt, instead focusing broadly on the act of eating out. To improve, the student should ensure each paragraph directly addresses the prompt's specific question and provides clear, logical support for their position.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the flow of ideas is frequently disrupted by grammatical errors and awkward phrasing. While there are attempts to use cohesive devices like 'On one of hand' and 'In conclusion', these are often used incorrectly or sound unnatural. The progression of ideas is difficult to follow because the sentences do not link logically to one another. The referencing is often unclear, making it hard for the reader to identify the subject of the sentences. To improve, the student should focus on using transition words more accurately and ensuring that each sentence builds logically upon the previous one.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic words like 'food', 'people', and 'eating'. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'outside foods' instead of 'fast food' or 'dining out', and 'they are repeat oil' instead of 'reused oil'. The student struggles to express complex ideas due to this restricted range. To reach a higher band, the student needs to expand their vocabulary to include more precise terms related to health, marketing, and lifestyle, and practice using these words in correct collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are significant issues with subject-verb agreement, sentence structure, and article usage (e.g., 'most of people are eating', 'they are not time to cook they self'). The essay relies almost exclusively on simple sentence structures, and attempts at more complex sentences are consistently faulty. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with many run-on sentences and missing commas. To improve, the student must focus on the basics of English sentence construction, particularly the correct use of verbs and pronouns, before attempting more complex grammatical structures.
