Student answer (Band 6.0)
Obesity is a growing concern in recent times. Many people blames it on the junk food advertising and suggests to bann it while others oppose the idea. Both these views will be discussed before stating my opinion.
People arguing about junk food being the major reason of obesity are correct about the situation. The most common diet of an obese person includes food having huge amount of unhealthy saturated fats and oils. Subsequently the junk food is highly promoted for its convenience and taste in modern times. Advertising films showcase these foods so irresistible and tempting that viewers feel the unnecessary urge to try it and enter the loop of unhealthy and overeating.
However, advertising industry cannot be blamed alone for obesity. Though it is one of the factor influencing, it cannot be stated as the sole reason and banning it cannot be considered the only solution. One of the major reason is also negligible physical activity. Over weight people choose their own lifestyle consisting of least body exercise. In order to maintain the body in perfect and healthy state people need to perform daily activities such as dancing, sports, jogging or gymnasium that involves movement. For instance, many patients suffering from obesity related problems get self aware after a point and start consuming healthy diets and often exercise in order to maintain a good balanced state.
Hence, I strongly agree to the fact that though advertising plays a considerable role in influencing people and directing them toward severe health problems such as obesity, it should not be sentenced as single major reason to the issue and the demand to get it banned is completely irrelevant to the subject.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both sides of the argument and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the influence of advertising and the role of physical inactivity. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the discussion on why advertising should not be banned could be more deeply explored with specific examples or counter-arguments. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the writer's stance. To reach a higher band, the student should aim to provide more detailed supporting evidence for each viewpoint.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Subsequently', 'However', and 'For instance', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The use of referencing is generally clear, although some sentences could be linked more fluidly to improve the flow. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the clarity of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, with some attempts at less common items like 'irresistible', 'negligible', and 'irrelevant'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'advertising films showcase these foods so irresistible' (should be 'as') and 'sentenced as single major reason' (should be 'cited as the'). While the range is adequate for the task, the student needs to focus on more precise word choices and natural collocations to move into the higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Many people blames', 'it is one of the factor') and article usage ('the junk food', 'in perfect and healthy state'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with pluralization and article usage, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures with greater precision.
