Student answer (Band 7.0)
Some people believe that junk-food advertising is a major contributor to obesity and should therefore be banned. Others argue that these advertisements have little effect on people's eating habits and should not be prohibited. This essay will discuss both views, and I believe that although advertising can influence people's choices, it is not the only cause of obesity.
On the one hand, junk-food advertising can encourage people to consume unhealthy food. This is particularly true for children and young people, who are highly exposed to advertisements on social media. When people repeatedly see attractive promotions for burgers, pizzas and other fast food, they may develop cravings and become more likely to purchase these products. As a result, frequent consumption of unhealthy food can contribute to weight gain and obesity. Therefore, banning or restricting such advertisements could help reduce their influence, particularly on children.
On the other hand, it can be argued that advertisements are not the main cause of obesity. People ultimately decide what they eat, and many individuals are capable of ignoring advertisements and choosing healthier alternatives. Obesity can also result from other factors, such as a lack of exercise, poor dietary habits and busy lifestyles. Therefore, completely banning junk-food advertisements may not solve the problem. Instead, people should be educated about healthy eating and encouraged to maintain an active lifestyle.
In conclusion, although junk-food advertising can influence people's eating habits and may contribute to obesity, I do not believe that it is the only cause. Therefore, rather than completely banning such advertisements, governments should consider restricting their exposure to children while also promoting healthy lifestyles.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both sides of the argument and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, such as the mention of social media influence on children and the counter-argument regarding personal responsibility. To reach a higher band, the essay could benefit from more specific examples or evidence, such as referencing a specific study or a real-world policy, to further substantiate the claims made in the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the progression of ideas is logical. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'As a result', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow between sentences is smooth, making the text easy to follow throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses relevant terms like 'prohibited', 'cravings', 'dietary habits', and 'restricting'. While the range is adequate, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the score to an 8.0. The word choices are accurate and natural, and there are no spelling errors that impede communication. To improve, the student could incorporate more precise collocations or academic synonyms to demonstrate a wider range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. For instance, the use of conditional-like structures ('When people repeatedly see... they may develop') and modal verbs ('could help', 'should be educated') is handled well. The punctuation is correct throughout. The writing is clear and error-free for the most part, though the range of complex structures could be slightly more varied to reach the highest band.
