Student answer (Band 6.0)
The number of obese people around the world has increased by a large number. In many societies, obesity is considered as bad for the health of an individual. One group of people put the blame on junk food advertising and want it to be banned. The other group feels that advertisements are not the problem and should not be banned. I will discuss both views and also give my opinion on this dilemma in the upcoming passage.
On one hand, there are many ways by which junk food advertising can lead a person to obesity, the main way it does this is by showing misleading visuals. To be more precise, in junk food advertisements , the people shown are often fit and attractive which can make the person watching the advertisement believe that junk food does not have any negative effects on their body. This person will view junk food in a positive light and the advertisement will act as a catalyst for them to buy it. It has been also proven that watching a visual of a food item can increase the craving for it in a person's mind. In a research done by the 'English Times' on effects of advertisements on people's mind , it was found that 78% of the people who bought junk food did so after watching an advertisement for it.
On the other hand, there are many factors which suggest that advertisements are not the problem as there are many ways in which adverts does not play a role in the consumption of junk food. The most crucial reason being their
availability . To elaborate further, junk food being available everywhere is more of reason for obesity than the adverts. Junk food is mostly eaten from local shops and these shops do not have advertisements for their food items. Junk food sellers are in every city and consequently, it is certain for a person who is outside to come across junk food and eat it.
To conclude, even though advertisements do promote obesity in people , it is only part of the problem and many other factors contribute to this problem. Just banning the adverts will not solve the problem.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the psychological impact of misleading visuals versus the issue of accessibility. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding accessibility is less detailed than the first body paragraph, and the conclusion is quite brief, failing to fully synthesize the arguments presented. While the position is clear, the depth of analysis could be improved to reach a higher band by providing more nuanced evidence or exploring the counter-arguments more thoroughly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To elaborate further' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition into the research example in the second paragraph is a bit abrupt. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'catalyst', 'misleading', and 'consumption'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is some repetition of basic terms like 'junk food' and 'problem'. Some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'in a research done by', which should be 'in research conducted by'. To improve, the student should aim for more varied synonyms and more precise academic phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'adverts does not play' (subject-verb agreement) and 'in a research done by' (article usage). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some spacing issues before commas. The student demonstrates a reasonable control of grammar, but the frequency of minor errors prevents a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement would help elevate the score.
