Student answer (Band 7.0)
In some societies, obesity has become a serious health concern. While some argue that banning junk food advertisements would help tackle this issue, others believe such a ban would be ineffective. This essay will discuss both views before giving my own opinion.
On the one hand, supporters of banning junk food advertising argue that it strongly influences eating habits, especially among children. Attractive ads on TV and social media make unhealthy foods look delicious and desirable, encouraging people to consume more calories, sugar and fat. For example, children who watch fast-food commercials daily often demand the same food from their parents. If these advertisements are banned, people would be less exposed to temptation and might make healthier choices, which could reduce obesity rates.
On the other hand, opponents argue that advertising is not the main cause of obesity. They believe that obesity is mainly due to a lack of personal responsibility, sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating choices. Even without ads, people would still buy junk food because it is cheap, tasty and easily available. Furthermore, banning advertising would affect business freedom and could not stop obesity alone. Instead of a ban, education about nutrition and regular exercise would be more effective.
In my opinion, although personal lifestyle is important, junk food advertising does play a significant role in promoting obesity. Therefore, I think governments should restrict such advertising, especially those targeting children, along with promoting awareness about healthy diets.
To conclude, while both views have merit, I believe that limiting junk food advertising combined with health education is the best way to address the problem of obesity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both viewpoints and providing a clear personal opinion. The arguments are relevant and well-supported, such as the mention of children's susceptibility to advertising and the counter-argument regarding personal responsibility. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the development of ideas could be slightly more extensive; for instance, providing a more specific example of a country that has implemented such a ban or a more detailed explanation of why education is considered more effective than regulation would strengthen the analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The structure is clear and easy to follow, demonstrating a good command of organizational features. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of the argument is logical from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'sedentary lifestyle', 'nutritional awareness', and 'business freedom' accurately. While the range is adequate, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the score to the 8.0+ range. The word choices are precise and convey the intended meaning without error, but the overall lexical variety is somewhat standard for this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. Complex structures, such as the conditional sentence 'If these advertisements are banned, people would be less exposed...', are used correctly. Punctuation is handled well, and the writing is clear and error-free for the most part. The control over grammar is consistent, and the minor slips are rare, which is characteristic of a high-level performance.
