Student answer (Band 7.0)
Introduction
Obesity has become a serious problem in many societies. Some people believe that advertisements for junk food are a major cause of this problem and should therefore be banned, while others argue that such advertising has little influence on people's weight. I believe that junk food advertising contributes to obesity, although it is not the only cause.
On the one hand, junk food advertisements can encourage people to consume unhealthy foods. Companies often use attractive images, popular celebrities and special offers to make their products appealing, especially to children and young people. As a result, people may be encouraged to eat foods that contain high levels of sugar, salt and fat. For example, frequent advertisements for burgers, sweets and soft drinks can make these products seem like a normal part of everyday meals. Therefore, restricting advertisements could help reduce the temptation to buy unhealthy food.
On the other hand, advertising is not the only reason why people become obese. Many people have unhealthy lifestyles because they do not exercise regularly or have limited knowledge about healthy eating. In addition, busy lifestyles can cause people to choose fast food because it is convenient and relatively inexpensive. Family eating habits and personal choices can also have a significant effect on a person's weight. Therefore, completely banning junk food advertisements may not solve the problem by itself.
Conclusion
In conclusion, although junk food advertising can encourage people to make unhealthy food choices, obesity is caused by several factors. In my opinion, governments should control advertisements for unhealthy food, particularly those aimed at children, while also promoting healthy diets and regular physical activity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly present both sides of the argument and provide a personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, particularly the discussion on how marketing strategies like 'attractive images' and 'celebrities' influence consumer behavior. The counter-argument regarding lifestyle factors is also logically presented. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples or evidence, such as mentioning a particular country's policy or a specific study, to further strengthen the depth of your analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'In addition', and 'Therefore'. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The flow of information is natural, and the relationship between ideas is consistently clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'encourage people to consume', 'limited knowledge', and 'significant effect' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is appropriate and conveys your meaning well, it is mostly standard. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items related to the topic, such as 'ubiquitous advertising', 'sedentary lifestyle', or 'nutritional literacy', to show greater flexibility and stylistic awareness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay displays a good range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., 'although junk food advertising can encourage...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense is consistent. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. To reach a higher band, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex structures, such as inversion or more advanced conditional forms, to demonstrate full flexibility.
