Student answer (Band 7.0)
Obesity has emerged as a major in concern in many societies. People have differing views on whether this is largely a result of junk food advertising, which should be banned. Although advertisements of processed food influence people to a great extent, I believe that banning the same would not solve the problem of obesity as it fails to address other significant causes like a sedentary and inactive lifestyle.
On the one hand, processed food advertising influence people's choices by utilising various tactics. Ads promoting junk food display individuals having a great time associating enjoyment with such foods. These advertisements are also usually shown in collaboration with e-commerce delivery options highlighting the convenience aspect of ready-to-eat processed food. Moreover, these are displayed repeatedly across various platforms like televisions, social media and hoardings breading familiarity in the user's mind making the individual feel the need to consume such foods resulting in excessive consumption, leading to obesity. Hence, supporters of this view believe that junk food advertising should be banned.
On the other hand, I believe that other causes like an unhealthy and inactive lifestyle contribute more significantly to the issue of obesity. In recent times, a considerable proportion of the population has started leading a sedentary lifestyle as more people have desk-based jobs. People spend majority of their time sitting and working on screens. In addition, the growing use of social media has led to people spending a considerable amount of time online because of which they engage in not physical activity. For instance, an employee who spends 8-10 hours of his day working on a desktop ends up scrolling on Instagram in his leisure time instead of going for a walk or attending the gym. Completely restricting junk food advertising would not really put a dent in individual's unhealthy habits, which can only be solved by encouraging them to adopt a more active lifestyle.
In conclusion, although junk food advertising can influence people’s eating habits and contribute to obesity, banning such advertisements alone would not effectively address the problem. In my view, greater emphasis should be placed on tackling sedentary lifestyles and encouraging people to engage in regular physical activity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position throughout. You have discussed both views—the argument for banning junk food advertising and the counter-argument regarding sedentary lifestyles—and supported your own opinion with relevant examples. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the explanation of how advertising creates familiarity and the link between desk-based jobs and obesity. To reach a higher band, you could further extend the discussion by briefly acknowledging the potential benefits of advertising (e.g., economic impact) before refuting them, which would provide a more nuanced exploration of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic, and you use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'On the one hand', and 'In conclusion' effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints. The referencing is generally clear, though some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the flow between sentences. For instance, the link between the second and third paragraphs could be strengthened to create a more seamless transition between the two opposing arguments.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'sedentary and inactive lifestyle', 'put a dent in', and 'tackling sedentary lifestyles' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'major in concern' (should be 'major concern') and 'breading familiarity' (should be 'breeding familiarity'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate that you are still developing control over less common lexical items. Expanding your use of academic collocations would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. You demonstrate good control over complex structures, such as the use of 'Although' clauses and relative clauses. There are occasional minor errors, such as 'engage in not physical activity' (should be 'engage in no physical activity' or 'do not engage in physical activity') and 'spend majority of their time' (should be 'spend the majority'). These are infrequent and do not hinder the reader's understanding, reflecting a solid command of grammar.
