In some societies, obesity is regarded as a major problem. Some people believe that junk food advertising is largely to blame for this problem and should be banned. However, others feel that junk food advertising does not contribute to the problem of obesity and should not be banned.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience·and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence. Write at least 250 words.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Obesity has emerged as a major in concern in many societies. People have differing views on whether this is largely a result of junk food advertising, which should be banned. Although advertisements of processed food influence people to a great extent, I believe that banning the same would not solve the problem of obesity as it fails to address other significant causes like a sedentary and inactive lifestyle.

On the one hand, processed food advertising influences people's choices by utilising various tactics. Ads promoting junk food display individuals having a great time, associating enjoyment with such foods. These advertisements are also usually shown in collaboration with e-commerce delivery options highlighting the convenience aspect of ready-to-eat processed food. Moreover, these are displayed repeatedly across various platforms like televisions, social media and hoardings breeding familiarity in the user's mind. This makes the individual feel the need to consume such foods, resulting in excessive consumption, leading to obesity. Hence, supporters of this view believe that junk food advertising should be banned.

On the other hand, I believe that other causes like an unhealthy and inactive lifestyle contribute more significantly to the issue of obesity. In recent times, a considerable proportion of the population has started leading a sedentary lifestyle as more people have desk-based jobs. People spend majority of their time sitting and working on screens. In addition, the growing use of social media has led to people spending a considerable amount of time online because of which they do not engage in physical activity. For instance, an employee who spends 8-10 hours of his day working on a desktop ends up scrolling on Instagram in his leisure time instead of going for a walk or attending the gym. Completely restricting junk food advertising would not really put a dent in individual's unhealthy habits, which can only be solved by encouraging them to adopt a more active lifestyle.

In conclusion, although junk food advertising can influence people’s eating habits and contribute to obesity, banning such advertisements alone would not effectively address the problem. In my view, greater emphasis should be placed on tackling sedentary lifestyles and encouraging people to engage in regular physical activity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt effectively. You have clearly discussed both sides of the argument—the role of advertising and the impact of sedentary lifestyles—and provided a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the explanation of how advertising tactics like convenience and repetition influence consumer behavior. The supporting evidence regarding desk-based jobs and screen time is relevant and logically linked to the topic. To reach a higher band, you could further extend the discussion by briefly acknowledging the counter-argument's validity more deeply before refuting it, but overall, the task is fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the two viewpoints is smooth, using appropriate cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is logical. The use of linking phrases like 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'Hence' helps guide the reader through your argument. The flow is natural, and the relationship between ideas is consistently clear, meeting the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, including topic-specific terms such as 'sedentary lifestyle', 'processed food', and 'convenience aspect'. The language is generally precise and natural. There are some minor instances where word choice could be more sophisticated, such as 'major in concern' (which is grammatically awkward) or 'put a dent in'. However, you successfully use less common lexical items like 'breeding familiarity' and 'tackling', which shows an awareness of style. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your ideas with precision and flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay displays a good variety of complex structures, such as conditional-like reasoning and participial phrases (e.g., 'associating enjoyment with such foods'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is solid. There is a minor error in the opening sentence ('major in concern' should be 'major concern'), but this is a rare slip that does not impede communication. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively to maintain a formal tone. The grammatical control is consistent throughout the response.
