Student answer (Band 5.0)

Nowadays, the major obstacle that is becoming more popular is obesity especially in teenagers. Some people consider that fast food is the main reason for this problem and it must be restricted, while other people argue that junk food does not play a vital role in the popularity of obesity and it should not be banned. I strongly agree that junk and street foods are the main causes of obesity.

In addition, young people are consuming junk food on a large scale. By this i mean that advertisements play a crucial role to attract the young generation. Moreover, special offers and deals make a massive contribution regarding to this problem. For instance, when children get to know about specials deals and attractive advertisements then they eat junk food which causes several diseases such as weakness, gain weight and even lack of immunity. Some people suggest that these colourfull advertisements should be banned. By this activity students will not get to know more about junk food and the special offers on them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5

The student has failed to meet the minimum length requirement, containing only 175 words instead of the required 250 words. This significantly impacts task achievement as the prompt requires discussing both views and giving an opinion, but the response cuts off abruptly mid-sentence in the second body paragraph ('In contrast, few people...'). Consequently, the second viewpoint and the counter-argument are completely undeveloped, and the conclusion is missing. Although the writer successfully introduces a clear position in the introduction ('I strongly agree that junk and street foods are the main causes of obesity') and touches upon advertising, the severe under-length and incomplete nature of the response mean it can only be awarded a band 4.5 under the official descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text demonstrates some basic organisational structure with paragraphs, though the essay is incomplete. The writer uses some cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'For instance' to link ideas within the first body paragraph. However, referencing is sometimes mechanical, and the abrupt end of the text severely disrupts the overall cohesion and progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph is left hanging as a fragment. Therefore, the coherence and cohesion match the Band 5.0 descriptor, where some basic organisation is present but overall progression breaks down.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The lexical resource is limited but minimally adequate. The student uses topic-related vocabulary such as 'obesity', 'fast food', 'advertisements', and 'immunity'. There are some inappropriate collocations or word choices, such as 'gain weight' instead of 'weight gain', and 'colourfull' contains a spelling error. The vocabulary allows the writer to convey basic ideas about junk food advertising, but the range is narrow and repetitive ('junk food', 'advertising', 'obesity'). This fits the Band 5.0 profile, where noticeability of errors and limited range restrict the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional or relative clauses ('when children get to know about specials deals and attractive advertisements then they eat junk food'). However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'By this i mean that', 'regarding to this problem', and 'By this activity students will not get to know'. Punctuation and capitalisation errors are also present, such as the lowercase 'i'. Because the response is very short and cuts off mid-sentence, the range is restricted, leading to a band score of 5.0.
