Student answer (Band 6.0)
From a society point of view, neither of the perspectives are right or wrong. Everybody is entitled to have their own opinion on matters. Obesity is a major problem and we see a very sudden increase in the rate of Obesity throughout the world.
Although blaming advertising junk food for Obesity seems a bit odd. Many people who eat junk food also maintain a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly which evens out their junk food intake, so the calories they consume are also burned by the regular exercises.
In my opinion it is a choice made by the consumer of how much junk food are they consuming on a day to day basis, If that exceeds a certain amount without any healthy activity in their lifestyle, It will most certainly lead to obesity with time.
For example the Obesity rate in America has increased by over 12% in the last few years, and because of this Diabetes has also become a huge problem specially in America, every 1 in 4 people in America is a Diabetic patient which makes you question whether Advertising junk food is the issue or Is it the consumer who can't control their urges. And to answer that, Junk foods have been advertised for many years before and it wasn't much common a few years back. And its mainly because lifestyle was much better a few years ago, Now that everything is on your phone, people find it hard to go out and find healthy activities. So in my opinion its caused by lack of interest in a healthy lifestyle rather than advertising.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views—the idea that junk food advertising is to blame and the counter-view that it does not contribute significantly—while also providing the writer's own opinion that lifestyle and consumer choice are the true culprits. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and lacks robust examples or academic evidence. The mention of the 12% increase in America lacks external context or academic precision, and the argument tends to over-generalise regarding consumer behaviour and lifestyle changes. While all parts of the task are touched upon, the depth of discussion is characteristic of a Band 6, where some ideas are presented but remain slightly under-developed and rely on personal assertions rather than thoroughly explored arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement, and the writer attempts to guide the reader through different perspectives using paragraph breaks. However, paragraphing is fragmented, with several very short paragraphs that disrupt the natural flow of an argumentative essay. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes mechanical or imprecise (e.g., starting multiple sentences with 'And' or 'So'). Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the dangling pronoun reference in 'And its mainly because lifestyle was much better...'. While the progression of ideas is generally understandable, the lack of sophisticated cohesive ties and choppy paragraph structuring prevent the response from achieving a Band 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their general ideas about obesity, advertising, and consumer choice. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary items such as 'perspectives', 'maintain a healthy lifestyle', and 'consumer of how much junk food'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'advertising junk food' (rather than 'junk food advertising') and 'Diabetes has also become a huge problem specially in America, every 1 in 4 people in America is a Diabetic patient' (where 'Diabetic patient' should ideally be 'diagnosed with diabetes'). Spelling is generally accurate, but the overall lexical range remains somewhat limited and repetitive, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and conditional structures. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several run-on sentences and comma splices, such as '...amount without any healthy activity in their lifestyle, It will most certainly lead...' and '...day to day basis, If that exceeds...'. Furthermore, capitalisation errors ('Obesity', 'Diabetes') and minor structural awkwardness appear frequently. While communication is not severely impeded, the frequency of grammatical and punctuation errors prevents the response from reaching a Band 6.5 or 7, placing it firmly at Band 5.5 due to the persistence of mechanical and structural errors.
