Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often believed that obesity is regarded as a major problem in some socities. Some individuals believe that food advertising companies are largely to blame for this issue and should be banned, while others argue that junk food advertising does not contribute to the problem of obesity, thus they should not be banned. I believe that advertisements should be banned as individuals can be influenced to experience that certain restaurant. The following essay will discuss both perspectives.

At the outset, some people eat junk food most often whenever they explore outdoors. A large number of youth generation is facing health issues such as obesity due to this regard. This is because due to the advancements in social media, food companies can influence us by showing their advertisements. For instance, in the present day, many food companies are presenting their taste by uploading videos on various applications. Ultimately, when these advertisements reach towards the targeted audience, they feel craving to try that fast food. Afterwards, they face severe obesity issues which can be dangerous in the long run.

On the other hand, some people argue that junk food advertisements should not be banned as they does not contribute to the obesity problem. Nowadays, citizens can get a better idea which product will be convenient and useful for them. In other words due to the advancements in technology, they can see reviews summary of clients who experienced that particular restaurant earlier. For example, if they are getting influenced after watching advertisement of any certain junk food company, they can see reviews and then make decision. Therefore, advertising a junk a fast food brand can also be beneficial as they can discover a restaurant with brilliant reviews. Consequently, this perspect does not contribute to the problem of obesity and should not be banned.

In conclusion, although advertising a fast food brand can be beneficial for an individual who was not aware of existence of that restaurant, I believe that advertisements of junk food should be banned as people can feel cravings to experience that certain restaurant, hence they face obesity problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that junk food advertising is to blame for obesity and should be banned, and that it does not contribute and should remain available—while also providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas leans towards repetition. For instance, the discussion on how advertisements create cravings and subsequent obesity is reiterated across multiple paragraphs without introducing fresh dimensions or robust evidence. The arguments remain somewhat general and rely heavily on personal assertions rather than well-extended examples. This places the response comfortably at Band 6.0, as it addresses all parts of the prompt with relevant ideas, but lacks the thorough extension and deep support required for higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is structured into four distinct paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a conclusion. There is a clear overall progression, and the student makes use of common cohesive markers such as 'At the outset', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical or awkward, as seen with phrases like 'due to this regard' and 'in this regard'. Furthermore, paragraphing is utilised, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs is sometimes disrupted by repetitive phrasing and slight abruptness in transitioning between ideas. Overall, the organizational structure is coherent enough to meet the Band 6 criteria, showing a logical arrangement of thoughts despite minor mechanical cohesion flaws.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully employing topic-related terms such as 'obesity', 'advertisements', 'social media', and 'targeted audience'. There are, however, noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'experience that certain restaurant' instead of 'visit that restaurant', 'reviews summary' instead of 'summary of reviews', and 'advertising a junk a fast food brand'. Additionally, some spelling and lexical slips occur, like 'socities' and 'perspect'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, these frequent minor inaccuracies prevent the response from reaching Band 7, making Band 6.0 a fair and accurate assessment.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'if they are getting influenced after watching advertisement of any certain junk food company, they can see reviews and then make decision.' There are, nevertheless, frequent grammatical errors, particularly involving subject-verb agreement ('junk food advertisements... as they does not contribute'), missing articles ('watching advertisement'), and awkward phrasing ('advertising a junk a fast food brand'). While these errors do not severely impede overall communication and the reader can still follow the arguments, their frequency prevents the essay from achieving a Band 6.5 or 7.0, aligning the grammar profile firmly with Band 5.5.
