Student answer (Band 5.0)

In this fast-paced modern era, obesity is still regarded as a major issue in some localities around the world. Most people think that advertisements for junk food are the main cause and should be banned, while many believe that they should continue, as advertisements are not the main problem contributing to obesity. In my opinion, advertisements are to blame for the problem of obesity. Both views are elaborated in further paragraphs.

To begin with, there are ample reasons to support this view. The entire junk food industry puts up big hoardings with attractive images of what they offer, with colour combinations that can be noticed easily from far away as well. Nowadays, with increasing use of social media, these companies make video advertisements of people having this food and showcasing their happiness and their emotions with the food by closely capturing their expressions. For instance, Domino's is putting up an advertisement on television about their latest 6 in 1 pizza and shows how youngsters are loving its taste; this attracts everyone to try it along with their family members who have different preferences. This is why elders are against advertisements and suggest banning them.

On the contrary, many individuals' belief regarding the fact that advertisements are not responsible for obesity, for example, a middle class family having limited imcome to spend on other exciting delicaci mainly because, despite attractive ads, having fast food depends solely on a person's curiosity to taste it and their willingness to buy it.

Conclusively, I would agree with the fact that

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address all parts of the task by discussing both views on junk food advertising and providing a personal opinion in the introduction. However, the development of ideas is severely compromised because the essay is incomplete, breaking off mid-sentence in the final paragraph. While the first body paragraph successfully explores the perspective that advertising is to blame—supported by a specific example regarding Domino's—the second body paragraph is syntactically broken and fails to articulate the counter-argument clearly, containing fragmented clauses and unfinished thoughts. Because the second view and the student's own opinion are not fully elaborated due to the truncated ending, the response overall falls short of a fully developed discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

There is an attempt to structure the essay logically with an introduction and body paragraphs, utilising basic cohesive markers such as 'To begin with' and 'On the contrary'. However, overall progression and logical arrangement break down significantly towards the end of the text. The third body paragraph is ungrammatical and structurally incomplete, leading to a complete breakdown in cohesion as it abruptly morphs into an unfinished concluding sentence. Paragraphing is initiated properly at the start, but the lack of a functional conclusion and the fragmented nature of the final sentences negatively impact the overall flow and structural integrity of the piece.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary suitable for discussing the topic of advertising and obesity, using terms such as 'fast-paced modern era', 'hoardings', and 'social media'. There are attempts to incorporate less common vocabulary, though some word choices are awkward or imprecise, such as 'having limited imcome to spend on other exciting delicaci'. Furthermore, noticeable errors in word form and spelling, including typos like 'imcome' and 'delicaci', cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect typical Band 5 limitations in lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over introductory subordinate clauses such as 'Nowadays, with increasing use of social media...'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. The text contains noticeable structural errors, particularly in the third body paragraph which features a run-on, highly convoluted structure ('for example, a middle class family having limited imcome... mainly because... depends solely on...'). Additionally, the essay ends abruptly with an incomplete sentence fragment. These frequent errors and structural failures impede communication and prevent the text from achieving a higher band.
