Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to discuss both views regarding junk food advertising and provides a personal opinion, satisfying the basic requirements of Task 2. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. For instance, the student repeatedly mentions that junk food causes obesity and that advertising influences people, without introducing deeper analysis, such as public health policies or economic impacts. The position is stated in the conclusion and partly in the body, but overall development tends to be circular. Concepts like 'routine's of exercise or yoga' touch upon the topic, but are not fully extended. While all parts of the prompt are addressed, the lack of depth and overly simplistic argumentation place this essay firmly at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, showing a basic structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, progression is frequently disrupted by poor logical flow and repetitive statements. Cohesive devices such as 'furthermore', 'moreover', and 'on the other hand' are attempted, but they are often used mechanically or inappropriately, such as beginning consecutive sentences with 'however'. Referencing is also unclear at times, as seen in pronouns like 'they' and 'it' whose antecedents are ambiguous. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion fails to guide the reader smoothly from one point to the next. This indicates a Band 5.0 performance for cohesion and coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently reusing words like 'obesity', 'junk food', 'advertising', and 'problem'. There are numerous word choice and collocation errors, such as 'access fat content' (excess), 'content large amount' (contain), 'in excessive manner', and 'jink food'. Spelling and morphological inaccuracies are noticeable throughout the text, including 'routine's', 'waking' (walking), 'adds' (ads), and 'there' instead of 'their'. While the language is minimally adequate to convey the general topic, the restricted range and frequent lexical errors prevent the score from reaching Band 5.0, resulting in a Band 4.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex or compound structures are almost invariably marred by serious errors, such as 'people should have to burn fat after eating junk food instead of completely banning it' (illogical collocation of actions) and 'if a person can eat jink food in control manner than it is acceptable'. Punctuation is weak, with missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences and missing commas. Frequent errors in verb forms, prepositions, and modal verbs ('should have to', 'can affect to') cause considerable difficulty for the reader and distort meaning at times, aligning with the Band 4.5 descriptors.
