Student answer (Band 6.5)
Obesity is regarded as a serious problem across many countries. Whilst some individuals agree that junk food advertising does not lead to the problem of obesity, I believe it can lead to some major health problems and should be banned because it is extremely attention-grabbing, provoking people to consume that food.
Individuals, especially the younger generations, are becoming increasingly aware of their consumption choices, and such advertisements do not influence them. The increased access to the internet and information has made them aware of the side effects and diseases that can occur from consuming fatty foods. For example, Germany has seen a surge in teenagers subscribing to gym and nutritionist options, which proves they not only stay physically fit but also maintain a balanced diet. However, I do believe that such campaigns should be banned because the group of self-aware people is still very small.
These days, junk food advertising has become very eye-catching and immediately garners attention. Advertising companies intentionally use colors and visuals that psychologically appeal to a person's appetite, thus luring them into purchasing the product. Billboards are strategically placed so that passersby can have a good glance at them. For instance, an ad run by a very popular fast-food chain during the halftime show grabbed significant attention, leading the burger displayed to be sold out across all branches in the country within a few hours. Therefore, I strongly believe that advertisements contribute to the rising problem of obesity.
In conclusion, although society is becoming increasingly self-aware of health, I believe the attention-grabbing nature of advertisements does attract people into consuming junk food.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on junk food advertising and providing a clear personal position. The writer introduces the first view in the second paragraph, acknowledging that some people believe advertisements do not influence self-aware individuals. The third paragraph then explores the opposing view, explaining how attention-grabbing advertising psychologically appeals to consumers and drives sales. A personal stance is established in the introduction and maintained throughout. However, some ideas, such as the example regarding Germany, tend to over-generalize and are slightly under-developed in terms of direct connection to the prompt. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a clear overall progression with logical paragraphing. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: introduction, the counter-argument, the main argument supporting a ban, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Whilst', 'For example', 'However', and 'Therefore' are employed to connect ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, and the writer successfully guides the reader through the argumentation. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, satisfying the criteria for Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student exhibits an adequate and sufficiently wide range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'attention-grabbing', 'psychologically appeal', and 'self-aware'. Word choices are generally appropriate, though there are occasional minor lexical inaccuracies, such as 'nutritionist options' instead of 'nutritionist consultations'. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout, allowing the message to be communicated clearly without impediment. The lexical range is consistent with a Band 6.5 or 7.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer successfully incorporates subordinate clauses and participial phrases, such as 'provoking people to consume that food' and 'leading the burger displayed to be sold out'. There are frequent error-free sentences, and punctuation is well-controlled. While minor structural awkwardness appears occasionally, grammatical errors do not impede communication at all. The control of grammar and sentence structures aligns comfortably with a Band 7.0.
