Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on junk food advertising and providing a clear personal position against banning it. The main ideas are extended and supported, such as mentioning genetics, lack of self-control, and economic development. However, the development of ideas tends to be slightly repetitive and over-generalized, particularly in the body paragraphs where points about cravings and self-control are laboured without fully exploring diverse examples. Despite these limitations, the overall task requirements are met adequately, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor for addressing all parts of the task with relevant ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing separating the introduction, two body paragraphs, and conclusion. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. There are numerous punctuation and spacing errors throughout the text, such as missing spaces after commas and periods (e.g., 'obesity .Many', 'views before', 'On the one hand ,'), and words are inconsistently capitalised (e.g., 'this essay', 'i beleive'). Referencing and cohesive devices are sometimes clumsy or repetitive ('secondly', 'subsequently'). While the logical progression of ideas is discernible, these mechanical and cohesive flaws keep the response at Band 5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-related terms like 'obesity', 'advertisements', 'genetically', and 'economy'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('disscuss', 'beleive', 'promotr', 'obease', 'devolep') and word choice issues ('mass of body' instead of 'body mass', 'over weighted' instead of 'overweight'). These lexical limitations and frequent spelling errors cause some distraction for the reader, fitting comfortably into the Band 5 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising subordinate clauses with conjunctions like 'when', 'since', and 'because'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in article usage, subject-verb agreement, and pluralisation (e.g., 'Daily habit of eating junkfood', 'the peoples who', 'they broke their diet', 'severala individuals'). Punctuation and sentence boundary errors also occur regularly. These frequent errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited grasp of complex sentence control, placing the response at Band 5.
