Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays, obesity has become a serious problem in many societies. Some people believe that advertising for junk food is one of the main reasons for this issue and should therefore be banned, while others argue that such advertisements have little effect on obesity and should not be prohibited. This essay will discuss both views and explain why I believe that restricting junk food advertising can help reduce this problem.

On the one hand, some people believe that junk food advertising should be banned because it can encourage people to make unhealthy food choices. Advertisements often use attractive images, discounts and popular celebrities to make fast food look appealing, especially to children and young people. As a result, people may consume burgers, pizzas and sugary drinks more frequently than they should. This can lead to excessive calorie intake and, over time, increase the risk of obesity. Therefore, restricting such advertisements could encourage people to choose healthier food options.

On the other hand, others argue that junk food advertising is not the main cause of obesity and should not be banned. They believe that people are responsible for their own food choices and can decide what they want to eat. In addition, obesity can be caused by several other factors, such as a lack of exercise, busy lifestyles and unhealthy eating habits. For example, people who regularly eat large portions and do little physical activity may become overweight even if they are not influenced by advertisements. Therefore, banning junk food advertising alone may not be enough to solve the problem.

In my opinion, although individuals should take responsibility for their eating habits, junk food advertising can still influence people's choices, particularly children. Therefore, I believe that strict restrictions on junk food advertisements, rather than a complete ban, would be a practical way to address obesity.

In conclusion, some people believe that junk food advertising contributes significantly to obesity and should be banned, whereas others believe that it is not the main cause of the problem. I believe that controlling such advertisements, along with encouraging healthy eating and regular exercise, would be a more effective solution.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student addresses all parts of the task well, discussing both views on junk food advertising and providing a clear, consistent personal position throughout the essay. The introduction clearly outlines the structure, and body paragraphs present relevant arguments for both sides. For instance, the first body paragraph discusses how advertisements encourage unhealthy eating habits among children through attractive imagery and discounts. The second counter-balances this by arguing that personal responsibility and sedentary lifestyles are bigger contributors to obesity. Finally, the writer provides a nuanced opinion suggesting strict restrictions rather than a complete ban. Ideas are well developed and supported with examples such as burgers, pizzas, and a lack of exercise. The response meets all criteria for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with a clear introduction, moving through well-structured body paragraphs representing opposing views, and ending with a balanced conclusion. Cohesive devices are used appropriately to guide the reader through the arguments, such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' 'As a result,' and 'In my opinion.' Referencing is clear and paragraphing is handled skilfully, ensuring that each distinct argument and perspective is separated into its own logical block. The overall flow is smooth and coherent, fully matching the requirements for Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision suitable for an academic response. Phrases such as 'excessive calorie intake,' 'sedentary lifestyles,' and 'practical way to address obesity' show a good grasp of topic-specific lection. There are also attempts at less common vocabulary items and collocations ('attractive images,' 'unhealthy food choices'). Word choice is generally appropriate and spelling is accurate throughout the text. While it stops short of the wider, highly fluent range seen at Band 8.0, the vocabulary used effectively communicates complex ideas without any noticeable errors, comfortably securing a Band 7.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The writer uses a good variety of complex sentence structures alongside simple forms with a high degree of accuracy. Examples of complex structures include 'Some people believe that advertising for junk food is one of the main reasons for this issue and should therefore be banned, while others argue that...' and 'people who regularly eat large portions and do little physical activity may become overweight even if they are not influenced by advertisements.' Punctuation is handled well, and subordinate clauses are integrated smoothly. There are frequent error-free sentences throughout the essay, demonstrating strong control over grammar and syntax, which fully satisfies the Band 7.0 descriptors.
