You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience·and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence. Write at least 250 words.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In many countries, obesity has become a serious public health concern. Some people argue that advertisements for junk food are the main reason for this issue and should therefore be prohibited. Others disagree and believe that such advertising has little influence on obesity rates and should not be restricted. This essay will discuss both views before explaining my own opinion.
On the one hand, many people believe that junk food advertisements contribute significantly to the increasing number of obese individuals. They argue that these advertisements often target children by using attractive images, famous celebrities, and promotional offers. As a result, young people may develop a preference for unhealthy food from an early age. For example, children who frequently see advertisements for burgers, sugary drinks, and snacks may pressure their parents to purchase these products. Therefore, banning such advertisements could reduce the consumption of unhealthy foods, especially among younger generations.
On the other hand, some people claim that advertising is not the main cause of obesity. They argue that individuals are responsible for their own eating habits and lifestyle choices. In their view, factors such as lack of exercise, poor education about nutrition, and busy lifestyles have a greater impact on obesity. For instance, a person who understands the importance of a balanced diet can still choose healthy food even after seeing junk food advertisements. Therefore, they believe that banning advertisements would not solve the problem.
In my opinion, although advertising plays a role in encouraging unhealthy eating habits, it is not the only reason behind obesity. A complete ban on junk food advertisements may be unnecessary; instead, governments should introduce stricter regulations, such as limiting advertisements aimed at children and ensuring that companies provide accurate information about their products. At the same time, promoting physical activity and nutrition education would be more effective solutions.
In conclusion, while some people consider junk food advertising a major contributor to obesity and support banning it, others believe personal choices and lifestyle factors are more important. I believe that controlling harmful advertising along with improving public awareness is the best approach to tackling this problem.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that junk food advertising is to blame and should be banned versus the view that it is not the main cause—and provides a clear, well-developed personal position. In the second and third paragraphs, the writer extends ideas logically by discussing how advertising targets children and comparing this with lifestyle factors like lack of exercise. The conclusion synthesises these arguments effectively. The position is maintained consistently throughout the essay, meeting all criteria for a Band 7.5 to 8.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, starting with a well-formulated introduction, moving through balanced body paragraphs ('On the one hand', 'On the other hand'), and finishing with a cohesive conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'For example', 'Therefore', and 'At the same time' are used effectively to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the essay flows naturally and maintains a high level of coherence.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The writer demonstrates a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common items such as 'prohibited', 'public health concern', 'nutritional education', and 'stricter regulations'. Word choice and collocations are generally accurate, allowing the essay to convey precise meanings. Although there are no major lexical errors, the vocabulary is slightly standard rather than sophisticated throughout, keeping it well within the Band 7 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The essay exhibits a good variety of complex sentence structures, including conditional-like clauses and subordinate clauses such as 'As a result, young people may develop a preference...' and '...a person who understands the importance of a balanced diet can still choose healthy food...'. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is well-controlled. Minor errors are practically non-existent, demonstrating a high degree of grammatical accuracy and control that aligns closely with Band 8 criteria.
