Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on junk food advertising and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is stated in the introduction and reiterated in the conclusion. Main ideas are presented, such as protecting children's health, alternative causes of obesity, and the role of government awareness campaigns. However, the development of these ideas leans towards generalisation and repetitive phrasing, particularly in the conclusion where sentences are duplicated. While the requirements of the task are met, the depth of explanation for some points remains somewhat limited, placing this performance securely within the Band 6 descriptor criteria.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing dividing the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Standard cohesive devices are employed, such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'To sum up'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition between ideas can feel abrupt, and the final paragraph suffers from noticeable redundancy, repeating the phrase 'Therefore, blaming advertising alone oversimplifies the problem' consecutively in the previous paragraph. Overall progression is visible, but the management of cohesive devices lacks the flexibility required for a higher band, justifying a score of 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'proponents', 'prohibited', and 'oversimplifies'. However, there are numerous noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'heath' instead of health, 'manufactures' instead of manufacturers, 'packeging', 'intersting', 'attract' instead of attracted, 'reserch', 'toddlers' used incorrectly to mean teenagers or children, 'Illegalised' instead of made illegal, 'awearness', and 'advers' instead of adverse. Despite these errors, meaning is generally conveyed without major impediment, fitting the profile of Band 5.5 rounded to 6.0 based on the adequacy of the broader lexical attempt.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there is a persistent pattern of grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and prepositional use, such as 'advertising dose not create' and 'educate the people for the this negative impacts'. Punctuation and article usage also show frequent lapses. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur with enough frequency to prevent the essay from reaching Band 6.5, making a score of 6.0 appropriate for a mix of successful structures and recurring inaccuracies.
