In some societies, obesity is regarded as a major problem. Some people believe that junk food advertising is largely to blame for this problem and should be banned. However, others feel that junk food advertising does not contribute to the problem of obesity and should not be banned.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience·and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence. Write at least 250 words.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is often argued that junk food advertising causes problems like obesity. Although, I believe that this statement is somehow correct. But this is not the only thing that generates obesity in humans. We will discuss both points of view in this essay.

On the one hand, people eat fast food mostly when they do not want to eat the same food they usually eat every day. However, this is somehow a positive view, as it means people have to change their taste buds and they want to try something new. For example, mostly in developed countries, when individuals come home from work, they get tired, and they do not want to cook something, so they just order or they eat fast food. Moreover, they do not eat junk food every day; they just eat it once a week . So, here we discuss the positive points of fast food.

Secondly, many of the youngsters do not pay attention to their health, and they just want to eat fast food every day; this is a bad habit overall, and this mostly happens in asian countries like Pakistan and India, where people just want to eat low-budget food, and they do not even think this is better for their health or not. According to the recent health survey, thousands of young people die every year due to obesity or by eating low-quality food. In my opinion, not all junk food should be banned, but the third class, or low-budget, bad food would be banned in every country.

In conclusion, not all kinds of junk food can cause obesity, but eating it in our daily routine can cause obesity; not only obesity, but it can also have destructive effects on your health, and eating it once in aweek couuld hurt your health. Not all types of junk food should be banned, but low-quality food should be banned due to the fact that this is the main cause of obesity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the main task requirements by discussing both views—the idea that junk food advertising promotes obesity and should be banned, and the counter-argument that it is not solely to blame—while also presenting a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and shifts illogically in parts. For instance, the second paragraph starts by discussing why people eat fast food due to fatigue, but then abruptly labels this as a 'positive view' because people want to 'change their taste buds'. Furthermore, the student's own opinion in the conclusion shifts slightly from the body paragraphs by introducing a new distinction about banning 'low-budget, bad food' rather than focusing strictly on advertising. Consequently, the task response is unevenly developed and lands at a Band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates some organizational structure with distinct paragraph breaks, but the overall progression is disjointed. Sentences like 'Although, I believe that this statement is somehow correct. But this is not the only thing...' demonstrate incorrect use of cohesive devices, breaking grammatical and logical flow. Paragraphing is attempted, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but the internal cohesion within the body paragraphs is frequently faulty or mechanical. For example, the transition 'Secondly, many of the youngsters do not pay attention...' introduces a completely different argument without clear logical linking to the preceding paragraph. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and repetition in the conclusion ('cause obesity... cause obesity') lowers the overall cohesion. This performance fits the Band 5.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses a basic and repetitive vocabulary range that is minimally adequate for the task. Words and phrases such as 'fast food', 'obesity', and 'health' are repeated frequently throughout the text. There are several noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'change their taste buds' used to mean trying something new, and the unusual descriptor 'the third class, or low-budget, bad food'. Other vocabulary choices, like 'youngsters' and 'daily routine', are standard but lack precision and flexibility. While the reader can understand the intended meaning, the restricted range and persistent word choice errors prevent the response from achieving a higher band score, aligning closely with Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are frequent sentence boundary errors, such as sentence fragments and comma splices, for example: 'Although, I believe that this statement is somehow correct. But this is not the only thing that generates obesity in humans.' Additionally, tense and agreement issues appear, such as 'bad food would be banned' instead of 'should be banned', and spelling errors like 'couuld'. Complex structures are often faulty and cause some difficulty for the reader. Because errors are frequent and occasionally impede smooth reading, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
