Student answer (Band 6.5)
certain societies, obesity is considered a major issue. Some people argue that unhealthy food advertising has a significant impact on this problem and should therefore be banned. However, others believe that advertising does not contribute significantly to obesity and should not be banned. This essay will discuss both views and give my opinion.
To begin with, some people believe that unhealthy food advertising should be banned because it encourages people, especially children, to eat unhealthy food. The main reason is that advertising companies often target children because they are attracted to colourful advertisements and famous celebrities. As a result, children may develop unhealthy eating habits from an early age, which can eventually lead to obesity and other health problems. Therefore, banning such advertisements could help create a healthier society and reduce pressure on hospitals.
On the other hand, others believe that advertising is not the main cause of obesity because people are responsible for their own food choices. For instance, if a person knows which foods are healthy for them, they can avoid unhealthy products even if they see advertisements for them. In addition, some people believe that governments should build exercise areas in every town because many individuals do not exercise regularly. Providing accessible places for physical activity could encourage people to exercise more often and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
To conclude, although unhealthy food advertising may influence people's eating habits, I believe that individuals and governments both have a role to play in tackling obesity. People should choose healthy food and exercise regularly, while governments should provide facilities and promote healthy lifestyles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on junk food advertising and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat uneven. While the arguments regarding children targeting and personal responsibility are relevant, they are somewhat generalised and lack specific supporting examples or evidence. For instance, the discussion on why advertising should be banned relies on general claims about children and health problems rather than explored consequences or concrete instances. To reach a higher level, the ideas would need to be more fully extended and supported with precise details, ensuring all aspects of the prompt receive equal depth of analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout, meeting the baseline requirements for a higher band while retaining characteristics of the level below. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving clearly from introduction to the first view, the second view, and finally the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' are used appropriately to guide the reader. However, some referencing and transitions can feel a bit mechanical or formulaic, and paragraphing could be managed with greater subtlety to fully demonstrate the flexibility expected at the next level.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their ideas clearly regarding obesity and advertising. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary items such as 'target children', 'unhealthy eating habits', and 'maintain a healthy lifestyle'. However, the range remains somewhat standard, and occasional minor inaccuracies in word choice or collocation appear. For instance, phrasing could sometimes be more precise or idiomatic rather than relying on straightforward descriptive terms. To achieve a higher score, the writer should incorporate a wider, more flexible range of sophisticated lexical items with greater control over nuance and style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The writing demonstrates a good control of grammar and punctuation, featuring a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The majority of sentences are error-free, and complex structures are handled quite well, such as in conditional and relative clauses like 'if a person knows which foods are healthy for them, they can avoid unhealthy products even if they see advertisements for them.' While a few minor errors persist, such as occasional awkward phrasing or slight articles issues, they rarely impede communication and the punctuation is generally reliable. The variety of structures and frequent error-free sentences securely anchor this response at a strong level for grammar.
