Student answer (Band 5.5)

In many societies, obesity is considered as a significant issue. Some individuals think that promoting junk food is the primary reason behind this problem which is why it should be banned . While others think advertising junk food does not have any impact on obesity issue and should be available. I largely believe that advertising play a crucial role in influencing our food habit as they trigger out temptation and emotion.

On the one hand, Some people think marketing does not play a major role in our food consumption habit. This is largely because people consider advertising as a mere ad which do not have any impact on our eating habit. Basically, they do not understand the psycology behind the influence of an ad. Furthermore, they believe marketing can not influence us in buying a lots of junck food.

On the other hand, some individuals percieve advertising a major threat. In this growing era of digital technology, consuming junk food is promoted as modernism, where consumption of junk food is shown in an artistic way and as somethink to uplift your mood. When people watch contents of eating junk food, they get easily temped and end up having that food. For example, sell of KFC surged after they advertised their chicken fry consumption on television. Moreover, when someone watches a content of consuming a burger, they order it out of temptation even if they have a stomach full food. Additionaly, some people associate their mood with food. Hence, when they eat foods especially junk foods they tend to feel better.

In conclusion, I believe advertising has a major contribution as they play with our mood and out of temptation we eat a lot of junk food which results in health risk such as obesity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views on junk food advertising and providing a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat limited and superficial. For instance, the paragraph arguing that advertising does not play a major role lacks extended reasoning and relies on repetitive statements that people simply consider ads as mere marketing. Similarly, the points supporting the opposing view are somewhat repetitive regarding temptation and mood. To reach a higher band, the ideas need to be more fully elaborated with more substantial and varied explanations or broader contextual examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is a recognisable overall structure with an introduction, separate body paragraphs for each opposing view, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct arguments. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by basic and repetitive cohesive devices, such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Additionally', which can feel mechanical. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous pronoun use in 'when they watch contents of eating junk food'. Achieving a higher band would require more flexible and sophisticated linking words, smoother transitions between sentences, and clearer referencing throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, successfully communicating the student's main points. There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary items, such as 'significance issue', 'psychology', and 'modernism'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling errors that affect precision, including 'junck', 'percieve', 'somethink', 'temped', and 'sell' instead of 'sales'. Additionally, phrasing like 'stomach full food' lacks natural collocation. To improve lexical scoring, the writer needs to expand their range of vocabulary, demonstrate better control over word forms and spelling, and employ more natural collocations suitable for academic writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at subordination with clauses introduced by 'when', 'while', and 'because'. However, there is a limited range of overall structures, and attempts at complex sentences frequently feature errors. Frequent grammatical and punctuation mistakes are present, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('advertising play', 'ad which do not'), missing articles ('obesity issue', 'major threat'), and incorrect verb forms ('advertising can not influence us in buying a lots'). To progress, the writer must improve accuracy in basic grammatical patterns, article usage, and plurals while demonstrating better control over complex sentence construction.
