In some societies, obesity is regarded as a major problem. Some people believe that junk food advertising is largely to blame for this problem and should be banned. However, others feel that junk food advertising does not contribute to the problem of obesity and should not be banned.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience·and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence. Write at least 250 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued by some, that junk food advertisements should be restricted, as they contribute to the increasingly obese population by tricking our mind into normalizing the fast food consumption. Conversely, some people oppose this idea because in their point of view people are intelligent enough to make their decisions. I totally agree with the first opinion, and I think such commercials shoul be banned.
Firstly, advertisements have the potential to make us believe that unhealthy eating habits are also normal. Our minds are wired in such a way that consistent exposure to something can make it favourable in our subconciousness. Hence, when we see fast food ads on our screens again and again, it becomes preference in our eyes unknowingly. For example, Pepsi advertises its cold drink consistenly, even though everyone is aware about it. The only reason behind this is that when we see it again and again, we are more likely to choose it.
On the other hand, those who are not in the favour of banning commercials think that people are mature enough to make choices about their own life. Basically,it is rooted in the belief that everybody should have freedom to make their own decision, especially when it only effects that individual. Thus, people should not be dictated by policies about their consuming habits. But in my view, this opinion is flawed. For example, we do not allow the advertisement of drugs, even though they are also a personal choice.
In conclusion, although people beleive that advertisements have nothing to do with the obesity, and it is everybody's personal choice, but fast food commercials should be banned to protect people from their potential psychic effects.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on junk food advertising and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is stated in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the discussion on the psychological effects of advertising is somewhat repetitive, relying heavily on the idea of seeing things 'again and again'. To reach a higher band, the arguments could be extended with more detailed explanations or broader sociological impacts rather than circling back to the same point about repetition.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the two body paragraphs discussing opposing views, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Conversely', and 'On the other hand' are employed to guide the reader, though referencing and transitional phrases occasionally feel a bit mechanical or formulaic. The progression from one idea to the next is clear, reflecting the solid organizational foundation of a mid-to-upper band response.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the writer's arguments. The student attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'subconciousness', 'normalization', and 'psychic effects', though there are some spelling errors ('consistenly', 'beleive') and minor word-choice inaccuracies ('cold drink' instead of 'soft drink' or 'beverage'). These errors do not impede communication, and the range of language is sufficient to allow the reader to grasp the intended meaning clearly, fitting the criteria for an adequate lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'It is often argued by some, that junk food advertisements should be restricted...' and conditional-style reasoning. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including unnecessary commas (e.g., after 'some') and spelling or typographical glitches like 'shoul' and missing spaces after punctuation ('Basically,it'). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the sentence structures to remain largely functional and clear.
