Student answer (Band 5.5)

People hold different opinion regarding that advertiding junk food is largely to blame for the problem of obesity while others believe that junk food advertising does not contribute to the problem of obesity and should not be banned. In this essay both opinions are discussed but i strongly believed that junk food advertising should not be blamed.

People who believe that junk food advertisement is responsible for the issue of obesity argue that this advertisement acts as a thirst trap and causes the viewers to buy and eat that food despite focusing on health factors. These adds are so visually appealing that anyone who watches gets the urge to have that food. This food could be snacks ,drinks ,fastfood ,and even desserts. This add lures the viewers to buy and eat the product which causes the issue of obesity in this society, and this is the main reason why this junk food advertising should be banned.

On the other hands if you look at the people who believe that junk food advertising is not the cause of obesity in the society argue that the self control over needs and limiting food intake is the responsibility of the person himselve. If you are aware of your physical health and conditions you should be able to control your needs and limit your intake .Ontop of that healthy food should be eaten and exercise should be made a part of daily life .I believe that it is the fault of the people with obesity rather then the advertisements as they should know what to eat and when to eat.

In conclusion ,advertisements do play a part but it is their job to sell their product and I believe people should be given awareness on their food intake rather then blaming society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both positions and state your own view, particularly in the introduction and conclusion, so the response is relevant to the task. However, the discussion is only partly developed: the argument that advertising encourages people to buy appealing food is explained, but the opposing case relies mainly on personal responsibility and receives little supporting evidence or example. Your position also shifts slightly: you say advertising should not be blamed, then conclude that advertisements “do play a part.” Clarify whether you oppose a ban despite recognising advertising’s influence, and explain that distinction. The claim that obesity is “the fault of the people” is overly broad; a more balanced discussion of other influences would make your response more convincing. (17 words copied from the task prompt were not counted.)

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. This helps the reader follow the broad direction of the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is limited, and some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “On the other hands” introduces the opposing view, but the paragraph then moves quickly from self-control to healthy eating and exercise without showing how these points connect to the advertising debate. The conclusion repeats the personal-responsibility position rather than resolving the tension between “advertising should not be blamed” and “advertisements do play a part.” Use clearer topic sentences and connect each supporting point explicitly to your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “obesity,” “advertisement,” “self control,” “food intake,” and “exercise,” which makes the subject clear. There are also attempts at more vivid phrasing, such as “visually appealing” and “lures the viewers.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or informal, which sometimes makes the argument less precise. “Thirst trap” is not suitable for this context, and “adds” is an incorrect spelling of “ads.” Other noticeable forms include “advertiding,” “himselve,” and “rather then.” Aim for accurate, formal expressions such as “influence purchasing decisions” and “contribute to weight gain,” and proofread spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “These ads are so visually appealing that anyone who watches gets the urge to have that food.” Nevertheless, errors are frequent, and some sentences are difficult to process because clauses are joined or structured inaccurately. The opening sentence is a long, incomplete construction, while “On the other hands if you look at the people … argue” lacks a clear grammatical subject and has faulty agreement. There are also errors in articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries, as in “This food could be snacks ,drinks ,fastfood.” Practise building complete sentences with one clear main clause, then add subordinate clauses; check agreement, punctuation, and capitalisation.
