Student answer (Band 5.5)

Obesity is a major health problem in some societies and some people are of the opinion that the culprit is junk food advertisement and they should be completely banned, while others feel that blaming the advertisement is not the right approach and it shouldn't be banned as the advertisements themselves are not contributing to the obesity itself.

I agree with the second group of people that adversitements are not responsible for the obesity of the people as the purpose of advertisements are to make people aware about what is popular currently or if there is a new innovation.

Obesity is a major problem of society as it contributes to a number of diseases. In order to overcome the issue some people blamed that the fast food is the culprit and moreover the advertisments are the main issue, and they should be banned. While other people are of the opinion that the advertisements themselves are not contributing to the obesity in the society and geting them banned will be fruitless.

It's true that fast food is one of the reason that people are getting obese but it doesn't mean that the advertisement culture is responsible for it. I understand that in advertisements the food looks much appetizing and one would like to give it a try. But the problem doesn't lie in giving it a try but the actual problem is overconsumption. Even if we are about to put a ban on junk food commercials its still not gonna stop or make the people less obese because actually these are the eating habits which are making people obese. Unhealthy living habits contributes much to the problem.

For example, making people aware about a virus is not gonna make the people catch that virus through announcements but unhygienic habits are gonna lead to people being affected.

As a result, fast food advertisements are not the main issue but unhealthy eating habits like over eating and relying only on fast food is. Sometimes its not even the fast food its some other health conditions that make the person obese. So that means we can't blame the commercials for it and there is no better that gonna come our way by getting them banned.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you reject a ban and argue that eating habits, rather than advertising, are the main cause of obesity. You also acknowledge the opposing view that fast food and its appealing advertisements may encourage people to try these products. However, the discussion of the view supporting a ban is brief, and the essay largely returns to your own position without fully explaining why supporters see advertising as influential. The virus analogy illustrates that information does not itself cause illness, but it does not closely demonstrate how advertising affects food choices. Develop both sides more evenly and use a specific, relevant example or evidence to support your reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has recognisable paragraphs and a generally understandable sequence: it introduces the debate, states your position, and then explains your reasoning. However, progression is weakened by repetition. The opening and the third paragraph both restate that advertising should not be blamed or banned, while the conclusion repeats the same point rather than drawing the discussion together. Some links are also awkward or unclear, such as “As a result” before the final summary and “For example” introducing an analogy that is not closely connected to food advertising. Give each paragraph a distinct purpose, use clearer links between claims and evidence, and avoid repeating the same conclusion in several places.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “obesity,” “overconsumption,” “unhealthy eating habits,” and “advertisements,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “problem,” “people,” and “advertisements,” and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural. For example, “the culprit is junk food advertisement” and “the purpose of advertisements are to make people aware about” do not express the ideas naturally; “advertising” and “raise awareness of” would be more suitable. There are also spelling errors such as “adversitements,” “advertisments,” and “geting.” Build a more precise range of topic-related expressions and proofread spelling and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including contrast clauses with “while” and conditional phrasing such as “Even if we are about to put a ban.” Meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction occur across the response. For instance, “the purpose of advertisements are” should have a singular verb, and “one of the reason” needs a plural noun. The opening sentence is long and difficult to control, while “there is no better that gonna come our way” is grammatically incomplete. Work on accurate subject–verb agreement and noun forms, and divide long sentences into clearer units. More reliable control of these patterns would make your argument easier to follow.
