Student answer (Band 6.0)

Obesity is considered as one of the major issues in some societies. Many people believe that junk food advertising plays a major role in this and hence, should be banned. But others argue that advertisement of junk food does not have much contribution in this problem and should not be banned. I believe, the latter one is true because obesity is caused by many factors.

On the one hand, people believe that consumption of junk food is due to its branding. This is because regular promotion of unhealthy food influences masses and makes it difficult for them to follow a healthy diet. As a result, it affects the overall health of people and eventually leads to obesity; hence, making it a major issue in the contemporary society. For instance, people usually eat more of the unhealthy snacks that are heavily promoted.

On the other hand, many people argue that promoting junk food does not have a major role in the growing issue of obesity. This is because obesity is caused by several factors, primarily due to sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy diet and reduced outdoor activties. These factors play a much bigger role than advertisement of junk food. Moreover, branding is a part of marketing and we cannot blame the companies for the poor decisions of people. For example, people in my country suffer from overweight majorly because of poor diet choices and less activities.

In conclusion, although advertisement can promote unhealthy lifestyle among people, I believe, people should hold themselves accountable for their poor diet choices and sedentary lifestyle.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear position: you support the view that advertising is not the main cause because obesity has several causes. The two body paragraphs are relevant, and you explain how promotion may influence eating habits before contrasting this with sedentary lifestyles and personal choices. However, the first view is supported mainly by a general claim and a brief example about heavily promoted snacks. The opposing view receives more explanation, but the example about people in your country remains broad and does not show how these factors outweigh advertising. Develop each side with a more specific example or evidence, and make your final position more nuanced by acknowledging whether advertising still contributes to the problem even if it is not the primary cause.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The progression from the influence of promotion to other causes is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help orient the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement and also shows some control of progression. However, links are sometimes mechanical, particularly the repeated “This is because” and “For example/For instance” patterns. The phrase “hence, making it a major issue” also attaches awkwardly to the preceding sentence. Use a wider range of linking methods and clearer references between claims and examples to make the flow more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “sedentary lifestyle,” “unhealthy diet,” “branding,” and “accountable,” so the main ideas are communicated clearly. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “contemporary society” and “overall health.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “advertisement of junk food,” “does not have much contribution,” and “people suffer from overweight” do not express the ideas idiomatically. “Branding” is also used where “advertising” or “marketing” would be more precise. These issues, along with the misspelling “activties,” limit the accuracy and flexibility of the vocabulary. Focus on natural collocations and precise word forms when discussing causes and effects.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect clauses such as “This is because regular promotion… influences masses” and a concession in the conclusion beginning “although.” Most sentences remain understandable, and errors do not prevent the reader from following your argument. Some grammatical inaccuracies persist, however. For example, “Obesity is considered as” uses an unnecessary preposition, while “I believe, the latter one is true” has awkward punctuation and sentence structure. In “sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy diet,” a space is missing after the comma, and the list would be clearer with parallel articles. Practise accurate article use, punctuation, and sentence framing, while continuing to use complex clauses.
