Student answer (Band 5.0)

Many individuals argue that advertisement of junk food promotes obesity and it should be banned. I believe that overall lifestyle is the major reason behind obesity, whereas restricting advertisment can lead to food business failing and consuming junk food is not harmful unless taking in right quantity.

Advertisements contributes to sales in any business and especially when it comes to food. Banning the food advertisement can cause serious problem to the owners and diminsh the business overall. Furthermore, people who travel often need quick warm food and this problem is tackled by huge fast food chains by preparing food in less than 5 minutes. For instance, junk food is cheap and quick, whereas dining in a good restaurant is expensive and not every one can afford it with a big family. In today's fast paced life where most of people neglect physical fitness and do not take right diet which is the main cause of obesity is still overlooked. People who work 9 to 5 usually consume junk food on daily basis and do not do any exercise which causes several health problem from which obesity is one.

Although, large bill boards advertising junk food pushes kids and adults to eat them, but eating it occasionally while maintaining lifestyle is not a problem. For example, many food bill boards are oftenly seen near schools as they targets students, whereas it teaches them patience and right financial planing.

Overall, food advertisments do catches people attention, nevertheless obesty is mostly caused by poor lifestyle and consuming junk food on daily basis.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a relevant overall position: lifestyle is the main cause of obesity, and advertising restrictions could harm businesses. You also acknowledge the opposing view by noting that billboards can encourage children and adults to eat junk food. However, the discussion is only partial: the case for banning advertising is not developed, and the claim that advertising teaches children “patience and right financial planing” does not clearly support your argument. Your examples about busy workers and affordable fast food are relevant, but they mainly explain why people choose it rather than showing how advertising affects obesity. Develop both views with clearer reasoning and evidence, then state your position consistently and explain why it outweighs the opposing argument.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from your position and the business argument to the opposing view and a conclusion. Some linking expressions, such as “Furthermore,” “Although,” and “Overall,” help signal relationships. However, progression between ideas is often difficult to follow. The first body paragraph combines advertising’s effect on businesses, convenience, affordability, work routines, diet, and exercise without clearly showing how each point connects to the question. The sentence beginning “Although” is also followed by “but,” creating an unclear relationship, and the final line of the response (“No self control…”) is disconnected from the essay. Organise each paragraph around one main argument and use clear references and transitions to connect supporting examples.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “obesity,” “junk food,” “physical fitness,” “fast food chains,” and “daily basis,” so the reader can generally understand the subject. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “fast paced life” and “financial planing.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “advertisement of junk food,” “food advertisement,” and “food bill boards.” Spelling errors such as “advertisment,” “diminsh,” “obesty,” and “oftenly” are noticeable and sometimes interrupt reading. Build a more accurate set of phrases for discussing advertising and health, and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a relative clause in “people who travel often need quick warm food” and a contrast introduced by “whereas.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some points difficult to interpret. For example, “Advertisements contributes” has subject–verb disagreement, while “Although … but” uses two competing conjunctions. In “which is the main cause of obesity is still overlooked,” the clause structure is unclear, and “people … consume junk food … and do not do any exercise which causes several health problem” has problems with clause attachment and plural agreement. Practise building one clear main clause with supporting clauses, and check agreement, articles, plurals, and punctuation.
