Student answer (Band 5.5)

In many parts of a nation, obesity has become increasingly common and is considered as a major health issue. Many people argue that, fast food advertising contributes significantly to obesity, while others believe that advertising of junk food is not the key driver of the problem. I personally believe that advertising is not the main reason for obesity, and people should be aware of their health and reduce junk food consumption.

Nowadays, the growing concern over obesity has become a major public health issue. Although, there are several factor behind this problem, many people believe that excessive consumption of fast food is the key and they want fast food advertisement should be banned. Inappropriate diet, irregular physical excercise, hormonal imbalance, and uncontrolled lifestyle are some of the key factors of obesity along the fast food consumption. For instance, many people are quiet concern about physical excercise but they consume different types of unhealthy fast food, and have physical issues. These can lead to obesity. As many people have less concern about healty diet, they suffer the consequence of overweight issue. So, it is clear that junk food is not only the cause of obesity.

Advertisement of a product is a strategy of increasing their sales and spread the importance of that product. Fast food industries use alluring and attractive illustrations, videos and visuals, so that they can attract many consumers. On top of that, they also decorate their restaurants and rooftops, and use social media for inhancing public attraction. Although, these types of advertisement encourage people to consume more junk food, they are not the primary factor of obesity. Which is why I believe advertiseing should not be banned.

To sum up, I think consumer should make a balance between fast food and their diet, which will help them to maintain a healthy life. At the same time, public awareness and regular physical exercise are also a good practice to reduce the problem of obesity. In conclusion, I reiterate that, as, Fast food advertisement is not the main issue of obesity, it will not be banned.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You present a clear opinion that advertising is not the main cause of obesity and should not be banned, and you mention other contributors such as diet, exercise, hormones, and lifestyle. You also acknowledge the opposing view by explaining that attractive advertising can encourage people to consume more junk food. However, the discussion is only partly developed: the case for banning advertising is described briefly, while the reasons for not banning it are asserted rather than supported with a specific example or evidence. The point about people being concerned about exercise but still eating unhealthy food is also difficult to follow. To strengthen the response, explain each side more fully and show how your examples support your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the main topic remains clear. Some linking phrases, such as “For instance,” “On top of that” and “To sum up,” help signal relationships between ideas. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the example about exercise and unhealthy food does not clearly demonstrate the preceding point, and “Which is why” begins a sentence fragment. Several transitions are also used mechanically, while the conclusion repeats the opinion without drawing together the discussion. Improve the links between claims and examples, and use referencing and transitions more precisely so the argument develops smoothly from one point to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “public health issue,” “hormonal imbalance,” “uncontrolled lifestyle” and “consumer.” These choices show an attempt to discuss causes and advertising rather than relying only on basic terms. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice problems, including “excercise,” “healty,” “quiet concern,” “inhancing” and “advertiseing.” Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “spread the importance of that product” and “physical issues.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the general message, but they reduce clarity and control. Check spelling carefully and choose more natural collocations, such as “promote a product” and “health problems,” to express your ideas more precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “Although” and a reason clause with “so that.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward or unclear. For example, “Although, there are several factor” has faulty punctuation and number agreement, while “they want fast food advertisement should be banned” lacks a grammatical link between the clauses. “Which is why I believe advertiseing should not be banned” is a sentence fragment, and the final sentence has confusing punctuation and capitalization. Practise building complete sentences with accurate clause connections, articles and plural forms, and proofread punctuation. More reliable control of these patterns would make your argument easier to follow.
