EU Exports of Goods to India and China in 2000 and 2011

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The four pie charts compare the exports from different European countries to India and China between 2000 and 2011 units measured in percentage.

Overall, in 2000 the United Kingdom exported goods to India the most but dropped in 2011 and was overtaken by Germany, while China received the largest percentage of goods from Germany in the both years. In addition, Austria exported the least proportion of goods to the both countries both for 2000 and 2011.

In detail, in 2000 India received goods from the UK the most, which accounted for 29%, and dropped noticeably to 13% in 2011, followed by Belgian with 25% and also decreased by 5% points in 2011, and Germany at 15% but rose significantly to 25% at the end of the period, while Sweden, Spain, and Finland give a similar percentage of 2% in 2000, and increased slightly by 1% point in 2011 except for Finland which remained constant. In addition, Netherlands, Italy, France, and other countries did not export above 9% of goods to India in 2000 but grew slightly to 5%, 9%, and 9% respectively. Furthermore, Austria remained the country that exported the least for 1% in 2000 to 2% in 2011.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the data, providing a clear overview and supporting details. You successfully identified the key trends, such as the UK's decline in exports to India and Germany's rise. However, the response is incomplete as it only discusses the data for India. The prompt explicitly asks for exports to both India and China; by omitting the China data entirely, you have failed to address a significant part of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure all data sets provided in the visual aids are analysed and compared.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore' to link sentences. However, the referencing is occasionally slightly mechanical, and the transition between the overview and the body paragraph could be smoother. The structure is generally easy to follow, but the lack of a second body paragraph to cover the missing China data limits the overall coherence of the report as a complete summary of the provided information.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'accounted for', 'remained constant', and 'proportion'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'give a similar percentage' (should be 'accounted for' or 'represented') and '5% points' (should be 'percentage points'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. Incorporating more sophisticated collocations related to data trends would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'in the both years' (should be 'in both years') and 'the both countries' (should be 'both countries'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and prepositional phrasing, such as 'for 1% in 2000 to 2% in 2011' (should be 'from 1% in 2000 to 2% in 2011'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent preposition usage.
