Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the task by identifying key trends in the pie charts. However, there are significant inaccuracies in the data reporting. For instance, the student states England was the 'biggest exporter' at 30% in 2000, whereas the chart shows Germany at 38% for China and other figures for India. The overview is also weak, as it only mentions Germany's growth rather than summarizing the broader shifts. The response lacks a clear, accurate summary of the main features, which is essential for a higher band score. To improve, ensure data is transcribed precisely and provide a more comprehensive overview of the trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally misused, such as 'While, In 2011 it slammed to only 13%'. The transition between ideas is sometimes abrupt, and the logical flow is hindered by the inaccuracies in the data presentation. Paragraphing is present but could be more effectively used to separate the analysis of India from that of China. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they are used correctly would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for higher bands. There are some awkward word choices, such as 'slammed to' and 'lose a minor export number'. The range is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors like 'big increase' and 'huge surge'. To achieve a higher score, you should use more sophisticated collocations and precise terminology related to data analysis, such as 'plummeted', 'marginal decline', or 'substantial growth'. The spelling is generally accurate, but the overall lexical range remains at a functional level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'were from done from here', 'Germany also present a big increase', and 'UK and Italy lose a minor export number'. These errors occasionally distract the reader but do not completely impede communication. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization after commas. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage, as the report should primarily use the past tense to describe the data from 2000 and 2011.
