Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the charts, but the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you identify key percentages for 2000 and 2011, the comparison between the two years is limited. You mention that Germany and Belgium contributed the highest amount of materials, but you do not clearly contrast the shifts in export patterns over the decade. To reach a higher band, ensure you provide a more comprehensive overview of the trends rather than just listing isolated data points. The inclusion of all countries in the introduction is unnecessary; focus on the most significant changes or the dominant exporters to provide a more analytical summary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the logical progression is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and repetitive sentence starters. For example, the transition 'Initially' is used to start the third paragraph, but the following sentences lack smooth cohesive links between the data points. While you use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'On the other hand', they are sometimes used mechanically. Improving the flow between sentences by using more varied referencing and linking words would enhance the overall coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. You rely on basic verbs like 'exported' and 'showed' repeatedly. There is also some awkward phrasing, such as 'exported of goods' and 'contributed the highest of materials', which are not standard collocations. To improve, try to incorporate more varied reporting verbs and nouns related to trade, such as 'accounted for', 'constituted', or 'figures for exports'. The range is sufficient to convey the main points, but the lack of flexibility in word choice limits the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'exported of goods' (incorrect preposition usage) and 'Finland and Austria exports equal percentage' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, the sentence 'It shows that Germany and Belgium contributed the highest of materials' is slightly ungrammatical. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions will significantly improve your accuracy.
